Not changing the locks, but adding a bolt?

A friend is separating from her husband. He leaves next month and is insistent on keeping a key. Mortgaged property in both names.

I know she can't change the locks but can she install additional security bolts to the door?
I mean the sort you can only lock from inside the house.

He would still have legal access but couldn't breeze in when she was in the shower etc.

Can't she just keep the keys in the door, I think that works.

Unfortunately, not that sort of lock.

if they are seperating then are solicitors etc involved? a quick call to them (which they may not charge for if its a OH! btw.. on the end of an existing conversation..) may sort it out
if not, i think you can email your local CAB these days and they get back to you within a week, so that may help :)

Can't see why she couldn't, especially as she is now on her own, some additional security would be useful. I have one on our back door that is just a twist lock (like a bathroom door) at the top and I always close it at night.

Quite often used to accidentally leave the key in the front door when XH lived here and he'd get cross that he couldn't get in. Worth thinking about....!

i assumed that if the OPs stbxh is insisting on keeping the key it was because of the joint mortgage and still wanting access to whats 'his'?
its really shady ground, if there was history of abuse or something like that then i think legally it tilts to favour her as shes protecting herself, but otherwise, its very merky legally :/
