Giving notice on a rented house?

DBIL has split up with his wife. They rent a house together, although contract is in his name.

He wants to give notice on the house (too big, memories etc) but has reviewed his contract and there doesnt appear to be a notice period stated.

They moved into the house in February 2009, and have renewed annually.

Can anyone advise what the notice would be - or is he tied in until next year?! This would be a bad thing!

It depends on the type of tenancy. Usually it's a month. You may be better checking the Shelter web site, as different types of agreements have different notice periods.

Have had a look thanks. He had a renewal a year after, but didn't get a new contract - so looks like a month's notice.

I've pointed him at Shelter so he can look himself.

Fingers crossed he can leave soon.

Thanks for the help!
