How high can a fence be between neighbours?

I think a fence can be no higher than 2meters as long as it does not border a highway.
i want to refence between neighbour and our house. The houses are terraced and at the moment there is a fence from the front doors of both houses to the front alley gate to seperate the gardens.
The terraces are on a pedestrian walk way with all the gardens at the front of the houses. We would like to fence higher than the 2.5ft rameshakle fence that is there now with closeboarded fence panels to gain some privacy as there is a patio/bbq area outside the fronnt door.
We were thinking 4ft with a 2ft trellis to grow clematis up.
Would this be acceptable legally?
Nothing on the paperwork from the solicitors, we own the fence and obviously will seek approval from the neighbour

Light is the other consideration. Will it affect their light?

As long as the fence is not adjacent to a highway, the house is not listed and permitted development rights have not been removed (that tends to only be on more modern properties - definitely not applicable if the house pre-dates 1948) then you can have a 2m high fence, wall or other means of enclosure on the boundary.

That was the answer from a Planning perspective, I don't know about any other legislation or legal aspects though.

6ft is the highest it can be without planning permission.
