how do I refer to the judge?!

Going to be acting in person before a judge on a family law matter on Monday (had hoped to avoid court but no).

How do I referr to him/her? My instinct is 'your honour' but is that American?

Don't want to get it wrong or be rude.

County court Judge is "Your Honour"

District Judge is Sir or "Marm" (phontetic spelling!)

Magistrates (lay ones) are "your worship" (not "your majesty as one client of mine called them many moons age :o) )

Professional Magistrates (they sit on their own) are same as DJs.

IME judges of any type don't mind being called Your Honour.

family law will be handled by a circuit judge (your honour) or a district judge (sir or madam)

DH works with a district judge, and we just call him "Judge". I have to be reminded who they are referring to when people say mr. So and so or "Andy". He's just judge to me. But I'm not actually in court, AND we are American so my experience is probably useless to your situation.

I I was in court, I'd probably go with Your Honour.

The Judge's title (district judge or His/Her Honour) will be on the top of the court list. If in doubt, ask the usher if there is one.

I agree with Collaborate, but I would Sir/Ma'am the chair of the Magistrates.
