CRB check

I recently volunteered to help out in DD's reception class. School said that's fine but I'd need to complete a CRB check first. At the time I did not think twice about it but now that I'm filling in the form I've remembered that when I was 11 I got caught shoplifting Blush I got in with the wrong crowd at a new school and clearly not my finest hour and but it's my only brush with the law. Do I need to declare this on the CRB form?

It's something that I did a long time ago and really do not want to reveal this to the school as it conflicts with my persona today (I am trained as GP and am an upstanding member of the community). School is quite posh and I just know it would reflect so badly on me and I don't want DD to be prejudiced either by this information. Will the CRB check pick up on this type of incident that occurred 30yrs ago?

If you are trained as a GP, then what has been on your previous CRBs??

I am an HR manager for a school. You need to declare it as it will come out on an enhanced CRB. It is very embarrassing. for both parties, for having to talk to people about things they have not declared. We had to do this with a teacher for something very similar - s/he was 10 when cautioned for criminal damage or something, didn't stop us employing him/her but did mean an awkward conversation had to be had that could so easily have been avoided.

You don't declare anything on the CRB form itself but you ought to tell the school about it. This should show up on your CRB check. It does not necessarily mean that you will be prevented from volunteering for your daughter's school. That is up to the school but they really should not be stopping you based on this incident in my view.

You dont fill in any paperwork to "declare" it on but the enhanced CRB shows up everything so i'd pre warn them in advance - it may be the admin staff who process the CRB's rather than the head.

Thanks all for replies and reassurances. I am probably fretting unecessarily I know. I will discuss with the school as I definitely don't want to make things worse if they come accross it later.

I did wonder the same thing about previous CRB. I can only conlude that it has appeared on my file and boss never raised with me for whatever reason, or that it's off my record as Police did say that it would be wiped clean providing repeat offences

The bad news is that on the enhanced CRB check everything shows up, including all spent convictions.

The good news is that before 1998 in england the age of criminal responsibility was 14 and above unless the child under that age knew the difference between right and wrong. Maybe the police and your parents were just trying to scare you into not doing it again as it was unlikely they would bother with such a minor offence in an 11 year old. In those days there was not such an emphasis on endless form filling and stats!
