I know I am partly to blame, everything has been getting on top of me: loss of income, a death in the family, and so my life is a mess.
Now my landlord is threatening to evict me. Can anyone advise me on the following:

How much notice do they have to give me?
If I am evicted by one landlord will I be blacklisted from renting somewhere else to live?
If I am evicted and have nowhere to go, will the local council insist I and DS move in with my mother? She lives about 13 miles away and it would mean changing schools for DS and me losing several of my income sources as they are locally based.

In England they need a court order and for that you'd need to be a couple of months behind and be making no effort to pay, even if in smaller amounts. The process is not quick but suggest you contact CAB or Shelter asap for advice. For non-payment you may be classsed as having made yourself homeless in which case the council do not have to rehouse you.

I am about 2 weeks behind and paying all arrears tomorrow: they are coming round to inspect the house on Monday so I am frantically clearing it. If they decide (or claim) that it's messy enough to breach the tenancy agreement will they still have to get a court order or will they literally throw us out?

They can't evict you for being 2 weeks behind. Have you looked at the shelter web site? Nor can they throw you out for being messy (as long as you're not damaging the property it shouldn't matter).

You need to be 2 months behind before they can secure a court order for eviction. Don't panic

Have had a look at SHelter, thanks everyone, it looks like the worst they can do is give me two months notice to leave (which will be distressing but not the end of the world.)
