Writing your own will

Has anyone (non legal) done this? I know there are forms/advice available online. We have a fairly uncomplicated set up, so would like to do it myself if I can.

Not generally considered a good idea, as what seems simple to a lay person may be more complex. Lots of charities will do you a cheap will if you promise them a small bequest.

You can get one done cheaply by a professional will writer. There's one on here who did ours a couple of months ago and she was v god. (Marlow Wills)

I really wouldn't recommend it. I've read many cases where people have done this or bought DIY kits but the will has not been executed (signed) correctly and therefore it is not valid.

Am pretty sure I read a post from a probate lawyer once saying they made more money from sorting out problems when people hadn't got valid wills than actually drafting the wills themselves.

I would also recommend Marlow wills, very reasonable rates.

A will writer did ours, plus powers of attorney. I think it was about £80 each for the wills. I wouldn't call our setup complicated, although we do have DC's, but I could not have produced a will to such a high standard covering all the eventualities.

Hulababy's husband (a specialist probate solicitor) always says that he makes more money out of sorting out home-made wills than he does writing them in the first place.

mumoverseas · 06/04/2011 11:24

ah, that was who it was who said that, it was Hulababy's hubby Grin
