Preventing OW or OM from seeing children - curious

Some years ago a friend of mine had an affair with a married man and he left his wife and children to live with my friend. The man was sent some sort of legal document about separation stating that my friend was not to have contact with the children. I remember her showing me the document although I can't remember what it said now. I have always been under the assumption that this can still happen - can it? I am just curious really as I see a lot of threads saying that when a husband leaves a wife can't stop the OW seeing the children whereas in my friend's case she was prevented from doing so. The relationship didn't last and he went back to his family. Any family lawyers able to clarify?

Parents with Parental Responsibility can usually decide what activities and who children meet when the children are with them. The exception to this is when there are specific conditions which regulate PR attached to a court order.

It will either have been a court order, or a letter from the mothers solicitor. Some people think letters from solicitors have magical properties and therefore comply with unreasonable requests contained in them. As a solicitor I do fing this useful, but don't understand it.
