If you're Spanish and marry a British man? I wondered if anyone had been through this and could tell me what the passport office/DVLA will require in the way of documentation to issue ID in your new name.

Would love to know...

Your marriage certificate

Do you happen to know if you need any special type of translation?

Sorry, I assumed you had married in the UK. Why don't you email the DVLA and passport office to ask. I'm sure you'd get a response.

Hi Crystal. I'm actually asking for a friend who is Spanish and has married a brit in Spain. Now she's back in the UK she wants to apply for a passport and driver's license in her new name. I've advised her to get a new Spanish passport in her married name and a sworn translation of her marriage certificate. She said she's spoken to the passport office and dvla repeatedly with no joy.

I'm going to tell her to try the Spanish embassy too, they should advise her.

I got married in Italy and my wedding certificate is in Italian.
I needed a certified copy/translation of the certificate to get my name changed back in UK

Get a few certified copies done as you need the actual certified copies (not copies of those iyswim) to post off to the bank, DVLA etc as they need to see the original certified translations

Change of name deed will do for anyone wanting to change their name on an official document. If she's Spanish, isn't she applying for a Spanish passport? Surely they wouldn't need a translation?!?

ecobatty · 13/02/2011 23:35

in the UK you can just change your name - all you need for dvla etc is proof that you are now using your new name.

A bank statement and a utility bill in the new name along with a change of name deed is enough.

Thanks. I've asked her if she's changing her name in Spain, although that would usually be Husband's Surname-Her Surname barrelled, so not quite sure if she can ask to have it just Husband's Surname.

Thanks for the DVLA info.

The point I wanted to make (though failed I think) is that if she wants to change her name on her passport she needs to do so in a way that satisfied the Spanish authorities. I don't think anyone here is qualified to deal with that point.

mamateur · 15/02/2011 14:16

I agree Resolution. A new Spanish passport is definitely the way to go.
