Losing all hope due to fraudsters

Hi,
My family is living a life of complete misery in France. We have been the victims of a fraud scam. We are so unhappy and have lost so much. My husband had his own business and was doing fine until we were introduced to some UK residents who offered to help him find more clients. The clients they found employed other workers illegally and without guarantees or insurance. My husband had all these things and when the sites went horribly wrong due to the other people working there, the clients said it was all my husband's fault and took us to court to try to get their money back and to make claims on our insurance.
This has had a major impact on our two children. They are not having a normal childhood. We are now on income support and somehow manage to scrape by each month, but I don't know how we have managed. My husband has folded his business, he could not go on any longer. We never go out, can't afford clothes (not even from the Red Cross shop) and worst of all we no longer trust a soul.
The authorities have not acted. No one listens and no one cares about us.
Its not right that fraudsters can do this to my children and ruin their lives. Its not right that these clients earn almost 130,000 GBP a year and yet are happy to tell more lies to keep us in the dirt. They have lied to their solicitor and the courts and I can prove it, but no one wants to know.

you have income support in france? or are you back in uk?

maybe got to cab?

Becasse · 21/01/2011 14:43

Hi,
We are still in France. We have tried everyone - British Embassy, police, victim support etc. British Embassy suggested we take the people to court ourselves (no money!), the Police here and in the UK have not done a thing (situation started in 2007) and victim support have not replied. I have written to the Ministry of Justice in the UK as this involves UK residents but they have not replied. I wish I could think of someone who cares enough to step in a save my family.
Thanks for your reply.

it sounds like one of those things you just have to move on from.

income support....well alot of us manage to survive on that. its doable. had no idea it was available to those living in another country thoConfused

or is it a french benefit called the same?

HecateQueenOfWitches · 21/01/2011 16:28

french benefits

Becasse · 21/01/2011 17:29

Thanks for your emails.
We have lost 30,000 Euros which is the amount the clients owe us. My husband managed to pay all his suppliers so that his business did not go down with debts. We are unable to move on because these clients want more from us. A total of around 100,000 Euros in compensation. The income support (RSA here in France) really helps, but cannot help with the solicitors bills. Until someone lets me prove that we are telling the truth, this is going to keep costing us and wearing us away. we cannot get French legal aid because my husband's accounts showed the 30,000 Euros which was invoiced but not received and so we did not qualify.

right. grim situation

what are you looking for from mumsnet?

CarrotsAreNotTheOnlyVegetables · 21/01/2011 20:44

Should the 30,000 euros not be balanced by a bad debt writeoff?

In UK accounts if income is not recoverable it is written off as a bad debt.

I have seen TV programs of people living in France, Spain etc who have come up against similar problems and the legal system seems very stacked against foreign nationals like yourselves. You seem to have done all you can, even lawyers in these countries have difficulty navigating the legal system there it seems!
