Retail sale stickering law info please!

Now I know this is anal, but Im bothered by it

I went to buy some paint from a large diy chain store. It was in the clearance section, with a sticker on it.

The sticker said was..£22.98
now..£5.00

It was handwritten.

Over the top, someone had put a £10 printed sticker, though you could still clearly read the £5 below sticker. It scanned at £10.

I thought this was illegal, and you actually had to remove the sticker if you are increasing the price?

A fiver means a lot to me right now, and Im in a foul mood so want to send a shitogram

I believe the price label on goods are what is called in law 'an invitation to treat', which means they can change the price to whatever they want. A price label is not binding.

If you didn't want to pay £10, why did you not say something at the till instead of waiting until you got home and then ruminating on it?

I did say something, but was met by an overweight greasy old chav chomping her chewing gum, and a 'no, it a tenner'.

It was one of those moments when I wanted to walk away, but I really wanted the paint

I agree that the price on a label is not binding but I also agree with monkey.
I know it def used to be when I was a teen stacking shelves on a Saturday that if you were increasing the price of something you had to take off the lower priced labels and totally replace with new price we had this drummed into us regularly so it certainly used to be the case.

Oh, wehad to do that, but it was also made clear that we didn't accept what was on the sticker without question. We got a lot of people peeling off one and substituting another, and then demanding to pay the lower price. The managers always explained it as thenightsky says.

Anyway monkey... good luck with the decorating... bet your paint looks a million dollars more than ten quid when you get it up.

It better had do, its super duper Crown scrubbale/washable/20x harder than normal emulsion paint for our dining room walls. The old matt emulsion has absorbed as much finger food painting as possible
