Gap repeatedly over-charging by 1p

I know, I know, hardly life-changing sums here, but it is bugging me.

Have bought DS 3 pairs of socks in Gap, advertised on the signs in shop as £2 each or 3 for £5. But when the assistant put them through the till it came up as £5.01. I queried this, and she said yes, sometimes it comes up as £4.97, other times as £5.01, it's the tills. And shrugged.

So I'm standing there, with 17mo DS in pushchair thinking I'd like to pay £5 please, but conscious DS probably won't continue being amiable for too much more shopping. So just pay it.

Went into another branch of Gap today for another 3 pairs of socks for DS. Same thing again. Didn't even bother to ask this time.

I know this is really petty, but please can anyone explain to me what is going on here, and what, if anything I can do about it/could do if it happens again?

Thanks!

you could contact consumer direct or watchdog- over a year that's a lot of 1ps potentially.

what do you think she would have done if you just handed over £5 and waited?

StealthPolarBear · 17/08/2010 22:02

that sounds incredibly dodgy on their part!
Also, you could ahve only had a fiver - I'm regularly in that position

Once upon a time I worked in Gap and this used to happen all the time (but usually only with the seasonal colours, as opposed to the ones we had year round IYSWIN). Some glitch with the tills that couldn't cope with 3 for £5 promos as far as I remember. However, we would never charge someone the extra penny. This was a bit of a pain when someone was paying by card, but still completely do-able by overriding the price.

I'd ask to speak to the manager tbh if it happens again. They have replaced the till system since I worked there, but doesn't sound like they've fixed it.

IYSWIM obviously.

Thanks everybody. I was paying by card, so I had limited options at the time. It did occur to me afterwards that I could have just asked for a penny back out of the till. Or asked them to put it in out of their pocket if they didn't see it as a problem Grin. Or ask the manager to do that.

Not sure I'm quite ready to take it to watchdog yet, but will bear that in mind if it happens again.
