If a debt is over a certain amount of years old, would you still be liable to pay it?

My sister has recieved a letter about a debt (for not too much, but too much for her atm) which she hadn't realised she hadn't paid. It was from approx. 10 yrs ago. She moved house and obv just forgot about it. I thought that after a certain number of years, you didn't have to pay, but could be wrong.

I think the limit is six years. But may depend on circumstances.
