Organising laundry (a dull question)

I confess I only have 2 dds but I thought I'd ask the experts on here. My dds are fairly close in age and dd2 is now growing out of baby clothes and will soon be potty trained (i hope!) Anyway how do you sort your laundry when you have dozens of socks that look the same size and are the same colour and then with knickers... arghh help me organise myself - I want to start off well.

I buy gap socks which have the sizes written on the bottom and look at labels for ages in knickers. Does that help?

It is easier with the boys as one wears boxer shorts, one wears pants.

I only have 1 at school so only one lot of school socks makes life easier.

Can you have different colour knickers - one DD in yellow and the other in purple or something?

Or you could live by the rule: if it fits, wear it and not worry what 'belongs' to whom? DH and I do this with socks, we have a communal collection of black socks and it works fine.

erm my dds have a slightly communal set of underwear.

as they get older, they are more territorial about their knickers (my 9yo has her own set and we all know about those).

I do laundry for 4 DC's.
Eldest boy has black socks.
Youngest boy has every colour but black.
Girls are easier to sort as they have differnt size feet.
As for undies. Well, I used to put a mark on them with a permanant pen. One dot for eldest, 2 dots for 2nd child etc etc

scrappydappydoo · 24/06/2010 15:29

Ah yes you see I thought if I put I was considering communal underwear I would get flamed - so glad thats an option

I have to cut the labels out of knickers because they're too annoying... I might try colours and the marker dot thing - at least it will give me the illusion of being organised!
Thanks for advice

I'm afraid the knickers do get mixed up for my younger dds as they are the same size, but I don't really think it is a problem as everything is washed thoroughly and there are no secretions! My older dd's knickers are more identifiable, and she monitors them, but even so she will steal her sisters' if necessary!

I get the socks from M&S which have different sizes sown into them, so I can tell, but my younger dds are the same size, so they share socks too.

scrappydappydoo · 24/06/2010 17:41

Ah Ha! - I shall head to M&S for socks - I presume they're on 3 for 2 as well so all good!

I always buy a different brand or design for each dd, for example dd1 currently has Next pants and M&S school socks; dd2 currently has M&S pants and Asda socks etc. etc. Then I recognise which is which. They are similar age, but different sized bums and feet!

But no problems with sharing; in a few months dd2 will find herself with a set of Next pants

TheNextMrsDepp · 24/06/2010 17:45

Actually, one thing to look out for is tights with size labels in. Otherwise they really are anonymous (until you spot dd1 with her crotch near her knees and dd2 looking like Norah Batty).

comewhinewithme · 24/06/2010 17:51

I have 5 girls the eldest 3 are all similar sizes so we have communal underwear .

glad I'm not the only one comewhinewithme!
