I would really appreciate any advice on this one. We are expecting our fourth child in July - so not too urgent. At present we have a VW passat which is over 10 years old but very reliable. Obviously once the fourth arrives we will need another seat. We are flat broke however.

My ideal solution would be to put an extra seat or two into the boot the way volvos used to in the 1980s. My DH thinks that just wouldn't be allowed these days... Can anyone put him right or suggest another workable solution please.

Thanks so much

i think you're really going to struggle tbh!

can you really not save up any more money??
£500 isn't going to get you a reliable car with enough seats

Wallace · 23/01/2010 21:03

I have seen old estate cars on ebay with an extra row of seats. Or an older people carrier perhaps.

Congratulations btw How old are your others?

MerlinsBeard · 23/01/2010 21:05

We have had to buy a car recently for around that. There are a number of Lagunas that have had extra seats put in the back with 3 point belts. I wouldn't know where to look for the safety of them though.

Wallace · 23/01/2010 21:08

Just remembered we had an old Peugeot when I was a kid that had an extra row of seats. It was bright yellow

PfftTheMagicDragon · 23/01/2010 21:09

six of these would do the trick, no?

yesway · 23/01/2010 21:10

Thanks for the responses.

The others are 4, 2 and 1 at the moment.

I have been presuming that as long as there is a three point seat belt and the seat was secure then it would be legal. We had a three point seat belt fitted for the middle seat in the vw quite cheaply. I'm reluctant to buy another old banger in case it costs a fortune in repairs.

LOL PfftTheMagicDragon - then we could save on fuel too.

i don't think you cacn just get seats to put in the boot though can you?

volvo still do jumpseats to go in the back of their estates, I believe they say they're not suitable for use with carseats though.

bronze · 23/01/2010 21:18

Is it just the older volvos that can take the jumpseats or the new ones too?

yesway · 23/01/2010 21:21

Ooh that's helpful. I didn't even know they were called that. Obviously no good if they don't take car seats though...

www.multimac.co.uk/car_seat_range

is this any good?

thisisyesterday · 23/01/2010 22:29

nope, new volvos too bronze. i have no idea how much they cost mind you, but you can def have them fitted as an extra

bronze · 23/01/2010 22:35

oooh really grin] grin]

yesway · 23/01/2010 22:36

Thanks babyicebean - that is inspired.

I will see if I can get them second hand somewhere.

My husband has been told he can have any (within reason) new hatchback, saloon or estate for his company car.
We have 4 kids I dont drive and we cant afford another car so this sounds fab
currently we dont go as a family he takes the older ones and I stay at home with the baby. not fun and needs solving

bronze · 23/01/2010 22:38

sorry yesway for crashing your thread

bronze · 23/01/2010 23:00

thisisyesterday cant see anything on their site but will definitely be ringing them
thank you you may have just saved my sanity

thisisyesterday · 23/01/2010 23:02

yeah def give them a ring, i think it might be part of the "family pack"
we got a used volvo last year and saw a fair few with the jumpseats in (we were only looking at ones that were a couple of years old, so i am sure they still do them)

thisisyesterday · 23/01/2010 23:16

hmm i have just done some googling and maybe i am wrong???

I am almost certain we had the option of having it retro-fitted in ours which is a 2006 one.

if they don't do it for new models then a volvo dealer might be able to tell you what year they stopped doing it, if a second-hand one is any good?

thisisyesterday · 23/01/2010 23:17

ahhh have just found this

bronze · 23/01/2010 23:31

ahh
ok so possible but not easy

yesway · 24/01/2010 13:33

No problem with crashing.

I am more and more sold on Babyicebean's suggestion here
www.multimac.co.uk/carseatrange.

It means we can keep all of our boot space too.

We'll have to start saving but it's a lot cheaper than the options we thought we had.

Thank you so much.
