Need an overnight stop in or near Poole on way to France

Problem is the cost of hotel with 4 kids aged 12, 10, 7 and 4.
What are my options?

Book a family room at Premier Inn. I know you are only supposed to take in 2 kids, but my sisters have sneaked in their 4 kids before now without a problem.

Which would be better, holiday inn express or premier inn?

I prefer Premier Inn myself. But compare the two to see which has the biggest rooms, as you'll need plenty of space. They usually have a spare duvet and pillows.
