i have 4 kids and would love more, I am new to mumsnet and am unsure what makes a large family,

Does anyone else feel that they would be frowned upon for having more kids

Oh god yes. Still haven't told anyone but dh that we are having number 4 because of negative reactions . I know I shouldn't care but they really get me down.

Idobelieveinfairies · 25/09/2008 09:43

I have 8 leamac..and did.. and still get sometimes some horrible reactions like..why on earth wouold you do that to yourself....the list goes on....

but also some very lovely comments about how good they all are..and i am sooo lucky...and how others would love more children but are scared of not coping and for other reasons....

Don't worry about what anyone else says...if you want more then have more...some women are just born to have babies

juuule · 25/09/2008 10:41

I found most of the negative comments stopped once we got past 5

leamac · 26/09/2008 19:59

maybe I'll have number 5

I have 3 and would love 4 or 5, but dh is not keen purely for financial reasons and lack of space etc,

I would worry about comments because people are very very negative and shocked these days if you have more than 3, you stand out.

But if dh agreed then I would have more in a shot. I would have to think of witty things to shut people up though !

chankins · 26/09/2008 20:03

O can I just ask, very nosily I admit, for those who have 4 and more, how rich are you ?!
Dh doesn't see how our money could stretch any further, and I guess he is right, so when I do meet large families I always want to ask what their jobs are !

minkersmum · 27/09/2008 22:11

My mum is always saying 'you're not having anymore surely',, esp if i am either uncomfortable at the beg or end of a pregnancy or if kids playing up or not sleeping.
That pisses me off, makes me feel like i can't have a moan... i want a moan every now and again but i def want more kids.

I live in highlands too leamac, we should start a trend of bigger families!! I'll blame the lack of tv channels where i live..

jellybeans · 27/09/2008 22:17

I am pg with no 5 and fear telling people due to negativity. We are not rich (one average wage) but have lowish outgoings, ASDA for clothes and share a car and holiday in the UK etc etc. We have a 3 bed house with 3 large rooms but some people are still horrified!! This is our last though as financially and more would be a struggle and we don't have the room etc and my pregnancies have al been traumatic and high risk.

minkersmum · 27/09/2008 22:24

jellybeans thats another thing my mum goes on about... 'you'll need to extend!'

We live in a two bedroom cottage, its tiny and we have just had number 3. We have 2 big dogs 2, just to add to the chaos!!

At the end of the day its no ones business but your own, its you who raises them so stuff everyone else and their opinions!

mum2boys2girls · 29/09/2008 16:24

I can't wait to have number 5 !!! I love having a large family I feel very blessed But I know I will get the oh you are mad comments !!! but to be honest it just goes over my head as its my life and it will be lived my way, I have a great DH and supportive family

largeginandtonic · 29/09/2008 16:29

I am pregnant with #7, i have not had so many negative comments this time. Think people may have just accepted it!

DH is Navy and i am a SAHM, we live in a 5 bedroomed house but really need another room when this one is born (due in Jan) we will see!

mum2boys2girls · 29/09/2008 16:40

Congrats lgat really envious !!! what are your age gaps?

largeginandtonic · 30/09/2008 07:29

Thank you!

The twins are 10 this month, dd is 8, ds#3 is 6, ds#4 is 3, ds#5 is 16 months.

I wanted a tiny age gap this time, i thought that if the baby was not big enough to run away it would be easier in the later stages of pregnancy. It took me a year to fall pregnant though. I was BF so not surprising really, now i have the worst age gap imho.

I like a 2 and a half year gap. No need for a double buggy then!!!

What are you thinking of doing?

Fink!!! >

Friend issue blown over, we skirt over it in general chit chat She is pregnant again, fortunately i have all the children in local (walking distance) school as of September so do not see her on the school run anymore.

I have no idea what she does now without me to ask. I dont ask either

How are you You were all so helpful on that thread! I had forgotten all about it. Look out for me v's family thread, coming soon to MN...

finknottle · 30/09/2008 11:36

I know it was driving you mad but it was so funny the way the European support network grew & there was Jane in Holland egging you on and me in Germany and you got more and more armour every day which got reinforced & polished, just tickled me

mum2boys2girls · 30/09/2008 11:47

I have ds is 14 ds2 is 12 dd1 nearly 7 and dd2 is 20months just started trying on month two just wish it would happen soon!!!!!

glitterchick · 02/10/2008 13:30

The reaction was and still is 'gosh, you have your hands full'. That comment annoys the crap out of me. I have 4. People deffo think you're a freak if you have any more than that but who cares. Go for it!

leamac · 15/10/2008 19:45

just to let you know that i have decided to try for number 5, thanks for all of you and your support and for helping me reach the desicion
