How did you know when you were done?

Is it a feeling you just get that you don’t want anymore or is it often for practical reasons like finances, space etc?

When you felt you were done did you stop there? Remove baby/pregnancy related items from the house? Or did you change your mind?

Feeling really tied, I thought I was done after my third and felt complete and content but dh is suddenly broody for another and it’s swayed me slightly. Although I had a hard time with my third and I’d be worried about going through the same thing again. Did you go with your head or heart when having your final baby?
Did you regret having one more/ not having one more? Any stories of experience would be welcome

I have 4 and I thought I was done, got rid of everything and then decided I wanted another, things never worked out for us and I never got another baby. I'm now nearly 50 and I'd still love another, we stopped trying when I had a ectopic, also had many miscarriages. I don't regret trying but I do regret how much of my time it took as I hit rock bottom, I probably would of hit rock bottom anyway as it was to do with other stuff. Sorry that doesn't answer your question. Whatever you decide I wish you well

BurningBenches · 12/12/2024 19:06

I had 3 and still felt very broody. then I had another 2 and after the 5th I felt zero broodiness ever again. This might be age related too as I had the last two at 40 and 41.

So now the youngest is 3.5, and I have absolutely zero interest in babies at all. No desire to have another at all. It just completely switched off.

EllieRosesMammy · 12/12/2024 19:11

Honestly I think you just know when you're done. I thought I was done when I was pregnant with my 3rd, I'm currently 35 weeks pregnant with my 4th😂

I've said I'm done now and I really don't think I'll change my mind about that. This pregnancy has been such a struggle, whilst also juggling a 7 year old, 3 year old and 2 year old. I also wasn't running my own business when I was pregnant with the other three - I am now and that's been a challenge in itself.

I thought I was done after 2 and always said we'd have 2 or 4 but after the 2nd we couldn't stop talking about another one and ended up with 3. I have no broodiness now at all, I'm not even bothered when newborns come to the office etc whereas before I'd be the first in line for a cuddle.

Decafflatteplease · 12/12/2024 19:24

We always wanted 4 and we are very lucky to have 4 and literally the minute I held our 4th I said to DH "I'm done" it was like a switch was flicked off.

Never had any desire for a 5th and now when I see newborn's I think "oh that's nice".but I'm not desperate to hold one or anything anymore!

Enko · 12/12/2024 19:27

I never felt "done" dh however very much was after 4. Even now in my.50s I would love another. Nature has put a stop to that though so I guess my next snuggles are grandchildren

RisingSunn · 12/12/2024 19:31

The desire just left! Very much 4 and done. The thought of another one 😵‍💫.

HettyCletter · 13/12/2024 19:04

I’ve just had baby number 4 and all the way through the pregnancy I said I was done (I’d always wanted four), but now he’s here I’d like another!

DH is a pretty definite ‘no’ to any more and, being practical, I’m not sure we could manage another financially. So I think I’ll have to make my peace with being done at the gorgeous four I have!

Lul00 · 13/12/2024 19:07

I had two and was done for financially/ space reasons. But I always wanted another. Went for number 3 and ended up with twins which has cured my broodiness 😅 xx

YorkshireIndie · 13/12/2024 19:11

I have space in my heart for a third but my health won't cope with another pregnancy/baby. I can't take certain medication

RandomMess · 13/12/2024 19:13

I never felt "done" but with 4 and finances stretched in a very small 3 bed and horrific periods I let my head rule rather than my emotions.

mrspresents · 13/12/2024 19:18

I only have 2 but wanted more but finances wouldn't allow it. I'm 43 now, so it's not going to happen, but I still feel broody. I'm glad in a way because university has become so expensive. I'm glad there are 5 years between my dc, as I never would have afforded it otherwise!

MrsBournville · 14/12/2024 11:59

I have 5 and still feel broody, I knew this would happen so I was sterilised during my c section with my last one
I am a firm believe in going with your heart

Don't say this, I'm pregnant with baby 4 (due in a few weeks) and I've been saying all the way through I'm sooo done. I'm hoping I remember that once he's here 😂

Bambanoo · 16/12/2024 00:04

I’m one of two and always pictured myself sort of arbitrarily with two kids.

Then I had my first and nothing has ever been as brilliant.

Now pregnant with number three. As usual, have been as sick as a dog and have promised my mum (who thinks I’m mad) that this is the last one.

But… Now that the vomiting is settled… I can’t help but think that four would be the perfect number. 😬

I think we will stop at three for financial reasons. Unless I win the lottery. I already feel sad that this will be my last baby, even though I hate pregnancy.

So maybe I’ll never feel done!

everychildmatters · 16/12/2024 00:24

After my husband had a vasectomy! I knew in my head before then, but it brought a certain finality to the situation. I have three kids (one his, other two with my ex-husband).

peachystormy · 16/12/2024 09:18

I knew I was done after 2. There's no way my mental health could take even one more ever again

MyStylish40s · 16/12/2024 09:24

I think it was hormonal for me. It’s like a switch just went off.

This was me too! Midwife asked if I'd be back again and I said 'no way, I am done' It's great to have that clarity.

Doingmybest12 · 17/12/2024 04:55

I just knew I didn't want another pregnancy or birth and that life would be busy enough. No desire what's so ever for another, but that's not to say I wasn't sentimental about leaving the baby stage. I would never have had another child because my husband wanted to.

TheForestCalls · 17/12/2024 05:20

I just felt completed and was done with the last one.

HangryBeaker · 17/12/2024 15:50

Have 3, for a while post 3 I wanted 4 and then one day I just really didn't. I thought I might be pregnant briefly on a holiday last year, when I'd almost gone off the idea anyway (had to have ivf for our babies, but were never declared lost causes, so thought a natural could be possible). I was really really glad to see my period. Now have a coil installed and am disposing of baby items!!

My third is a newborn and this is how I feel too. DH would like another but for me it's a hard no. In fact I would like him to have a vasectomy ideally but he doesn't want to.
