Shoe storage for big (6+) families.

We are a family of 6. All adult sized shoes. (Three size 10-12, three size 5-6)

I'm looking for downstairs shoe storage ideas. I'd estimate there being 15-25 pairs downstairs at any given time. (They also store shoes in bedrooms)

I have an open void under the stairs. Currently have two chests that shoes are thrown in. But to find a pair you often have to empty the chest. Want a different idea, ideally where you can see the shoes to get then.

Under stairs is a triangle of 175cm vertical and horizontal. Depth 100m.

I'm struggling to think of the best solution. Most under stairs storage is cubes. But having measured, we wouldn't get two pairs into one 30cm cube. So would end up with 1 pair per cube, wasted space. Or it looking messy with shoes shoved in all over the place.

Do you have any ideas?

I've seen that @parietal. I don't want built in, because as the children grow and leave, the space will evolve.

Also, was discussing earlier with DH that we think it needs to be open storage. Anything thar requires a door to be opened, realistically with how busy the family is, the door would stay open all the time. It has to work from a practical point of view.

Different colour flexi tub each?

We have under the stairs drawers (like the clever closet ones linked above). They are amazing

Seriously amazing. Enough space to store all our shoes, my hallway is clear. And on thebodd occasion that shoes do collect in the hallway it takes seconds to bung them all in their proper home and i once again have a clear tidy hallway.

We’re also a family of 6 (all adults and teens) and shoes stay in bedrooms here. Other than DH’s irritating habit of leaving a pair of shoes at the back door and another pair by the stairs ready to go out.

I have these stacked up in my bedroom for my (many) pairs of shoes. They pull out like drawers so they can stay stacked but all the shoes are accessible. I can fit 2 pairs of some shoes into 1 box, like my Vejas, and 3 pairs of ballet flats/TOMS.

These ones aren’t available on Amazon just now but would something like this work?

We are also a family of 6. We have a coat hook unit from Amazon with shoe shelves as part of it for mainly used shoes. Wellies/walking boots/football boots are in a trug in the utility room

We have 5 of us at home, and we have a couple of ikea kallax with the drona boxes under our stairs- I've found a drona box holds about 6-8 pairs of size 5s, and about 4-5 pairs of size 10's, we can fit 2x wellies, and 2x walking boots in one drona too. They are larger than say, argos cube storage boxes.

We found that having a shoe storage cabinet in the hallway helped loads—especially one with deep drawers so each kid gets their own. I labelled each drawer with names to avoid arguments and mixed-up shoes. It’s been way easier to keep things tidy and no more morning panics over lost trainers.

we have welly racks outside the front door for them and our muddy shoes. We do have a sort of porch that covers it though. Perhaps something like this inside the cupboard could work for you.

we then have a shoe storage unit in the hall with a few pairs each in.

if you don’t want built in under the stairs I think your option is baskets/buckets.
