Hi all,

Background - am about to turn 37, DH is 41. Both previously widowed with older children now, so we have DS11, DD9 and DSD8 already.

Have found myself unexpectedly pregnant. We had been discussing whether to have another (and our first/only biological child together) but hadn't fully made our minds up!

Am happy and also a bit terrified. DH is the same. The children don't know yet as it's early days and having had a miscarriage in the past, I am nervous about things not going well.

Can anyone talk to me about blended families with larger age gaps and how it has worked, please?

You might want to post this in Chat for some responses.

My son is 13 from first marriage, and my daughter is 3 from this marriage.

One of the good bits is that as DS is older, he can get himself up, fed dressed and off to school on his own.

Dd loves big brother, and they get in great - other than winding each other up, normal sibling stuff.

But the bit I've found most hard, is that they both need such different things from me and it can be exhausting.

Ds is going into year 9, puberty has hit, and he's been with his girlfriend for over a year now. It's all very cute, but helping him navigate this and then playing shops and drs with DD who doesn't always understand (she is 3) that I need to spend time with DS without her can be hard work.

It's all a learning curve, and a balancing act.
