Pregnant with number 4 - what car to get?

I just wondered what cars people with 4 kids have? We don’t want a van as we live in central London but we do want space for all 6 of us to sit comfortable and have room for luggage/pushchair.

SEAT Alhambra. Honestly it’s not chic but it is hands down the best car we’ve ever had, we have an ‘04 (!) and it’s got three isofix points and option for a 4th if you buy a special for the back row (easy to come by).

We used to live in SW London and drove to NW London via Hammersmith Bridge etc, was all completely fine and dandy

Thanks for this. With back row up in there room for a pram and suitcase in the boot?

Yep, we managed to ram in an Out and About Nipper double and a 23kg suitcase. Granted it will take you brute force to shove in but it works.

We have 4 DC (12,10,8 and 6) and an S-Max with a Multimac seat. Have had it for 6 years now, and 12 year old (average height / build) still fits in the Multimac fine, so we have lots of boot space.

@InfiniteGerbils and @Starmer - thank you so much for taking time to reply.

@WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat fuck the fuck off. You have no idea of individual circumstances and your comment is nothing but an indictment on yourself.

@Starmer is the multimac worth it? We're ttc #4, and have been considering getting one for our Zafira.

Starmer · 17/06/2020 13:43

@Threnody ours has been great. It’s meant that we’ve retained all the boot space in the car, so can even - just about! - squeeze in a tent and camping stuff too. I am dreading our eldest growing out of it, to be honest, as we’ll have to use the seats in the back of the S-max and will lose so much space.
The children are comfortable, baby seat worked fine. The only drawback - which I would hope has been sorted by now - is that Kevin, who makes them, was so disorganised so it took us a while to get hold of one.

Lollypop4 · 17/06/2020 13:45

We have a Kia Sorrento. Love it!
The boot seats are large , however, my oldrr children couldnt fit in comfortably after age 10 & Very little boot space if both boot seats up.

Threnody · 17/06/2020 18:25

@Starmer thanks, that's really good to know! It was one of my main worries, how to transport the children!

I think now you can get an extension clip so an adult can use it, but not sure if you could fit it to an existing one.

Starmer · 17/06/2020 20:36

@Threnody I have just looked at the alternative seat belt for older children - thank you!! May be able use the Multimac for a few more years!

Threnody · 17/06/2020 23:39

That's great @Starmer

I have a ford galaxy 7 seater, I would recommend checking out test drive cars as they have very low mileage and have a lot of money knocked off because they have been driven!

We have an old style XC90 that has been perfect for life with 4 kids.

Recently gave no.5 and have to use all seats permanently which is a bit less fun but we’ve just come away for 3 weeks in wales using the car and a roof box including a pushchair.

We live in an outer London borough so not central but we have no issues with the Volvo when we do drive closer to central.
