I think having lots of kids in infinitely easier than just having one or two, but I would concur about the washing maching nightmare scenario. The answer here is to make friends with your local branch of John Lewis, and teach anyone of secondary school age how to sort and load a wash as well as iron their own school shirts. Mine have been rather good at this.
