Maccabi Tel Aviv ban

Does this not seem another case of blame the potential victims rather than the potential perpetrators? How on earth can the police’s response to this be to ban the Maccabi supporters rather than properly policing a bunch of rampaging thugs bent on doing harm to a relatively small group of football supporters. They cite the trouble caused in Amsterdam but the vast majority of those arrested were local and almost certainly would be in this case too. It’s an absolute disgrace and would not happen to supporters from any other country or religion.

It’s absolutely horrendous. I was appalled when I heard this. Immediately I thought of two things- 1933, Weimar Republic and Martin Niemöller’s repentance poem ‘First they came..’

Imho every football fan who intended attending the match should now boycott.

Horrified tbh. Unfortunately the local MP is an independent pro-Pally Muslim so we had no chance.

Do you have a source for the majority of arrests at the Amsterdam game being locals? My football-loving dh is asking whether the ‘security issues’ relate to MTA fan-thugs, or anti-Semitism/anti-Israelism.

He also thinks that a reasonable compromise would be closed doors for both sides.

I read that there was about 60 arrests with 10 being Israelis. That’s from Al Jazeera who then went onto say that the Jewish propaganda machine kicked in to talk about Jew hunts. Those Jews are amazing with their propaganda, no? That live footage of dark skinned amsterdammers attacking Jews was rustled up instantaneously, don’t you know!

It is outrageous and scary. Apparently, our Home Sec had 2 opportunities to intervene but chose not to. Says it all.

It definitely shook me as well. Really terrible to hear just now. But the news overnight hasn’t helped - sounds like the fans are out of control and Israel can’t even keep them from destroying things. I hate football riots, I hate the horrible marches and protests nonstop, I hate that I now am not even sure they can keep the players themselves safe, I hate not feeling safe. I saw this interview with a Jewish woman in London and she was just crying saying she’s just so, so tired of being scared and I cannot agree more.

Isn't the proposed ban illegal under the equality act?
And how could it possibly be enforced anyway?
