Hebrew TV shows/books

Hi all,

I'm looking for recommendations of Hebrew TV shows and books for a toddler. We prefer slow moving, relaxed things with a rural topic, things like Tractor Ted 1st season or Come Outside.

For the books, we don't mind the topic, but we are struggling to find good quality writing in contemporary books. We enjoy books by Leah Goldberg, Tiras Cham, HaBait shel Yael, Uri Caduri, Mar Guzmai... but are looking for more!

Also, where do you buy your Hebrew books in the UK? We're thinking of doing a massive Steimatzky delivery to make the delivery fee worth it.

Many thanks

I would network with other hebrew speaking families where you live, they often want to pass on kids books.

I have DD4 and DS2 and we watch Parpar Nechmad, Pitzi, MiniTaf, Luli, all on YouTube or the Kan app using a VPN.

For books, if you’re anywhere near Stockport there’s an Israeli lady who has a home library.

Otherwise we tend to ask friends and relatives to bring books from Israel when they come. DH says a lot of Hebrew kids books are poor translations, but he loves Meir Shalev, Datya Ben Dor, the Ayelet series, Chanan haGanan.

Thank you, both, these are really useful suggestions!

I hadn't realised that Meir Shalev writes books for children, great to know. This is something I've always found uniquely Israeli - the greatest writers, musicians and other artists produce for both adults and children.

I have the most insane Israeli books that I got from the pj library here. The stories are just bonkers. I also read them to my daughter (she’s 5) not always knowing every word 🥴😄 and when I can translate I’m not even sure what they mean 😂
sorry not helpful- I’ve just found the little kids books so far to be just hilariously random 😅
I did buy a few english books translated to Hebrew here in steimatzky (dogman- ish hakelev) but that’s for much older kids and also I had to sell an organ to afford it.
im wondering if you could pick up a few in a judaica/sefarim shop? Wouldn’t necessarily be heavily religious. I can send you a name and address by pm if you’re more northern?

Yes, I joined PJ library - totally wild! Was expecting something Hebrew, but they're all in "English" (one is counting in Ladino, and another introducing Yiddish, but all coming from an English base). Somehow she really loves them. Do you get yours in Hebrew? Looking forward to whatever the next surprise is...

I think we'd prefer not translations - important to enjoy Israeli culture, humour, quirks and so on too. That's a good idea re judaica shops. We're in the Jewish desert of the South West, but will investigate next time we're up in London.

They send them home with them from gan- I didn’t join! I’m still scratching my head with some of them, the story lines are just so random 😆Yes mine are in Hebrew.

my knowledge of Yiddish is pathetic (I can’t even count) and I know zero ladino. Your books sound better than mine- I’m a bit jealous 😄
