Workplace Unions

Does anyone know if there are any unions suitable for Jewish people to join? I’m a council worker so the obvious choices are Unison and Unite; unfortunately they both support the Palestine Solidarity Campaign. Having looked into the PSC, it does seem to be anti semitic (and happy to listen to Jewish Voices For Peace 🙄) and I’d rather not fund that through my subs. On the other hand I’d like to be protected in case of any issues at work.
Hope it’s ok to post this but I’ve just found out about the PSC link and have cancelled my union membership.

That's an appalling situation to be in. I'm not Jewish but my Union has a lot of problematic affiliations - the politicisation of individual unions (with issues other than protecting their workers) is a real problem so I'd be interested to hear people's responses. Have you tried contacting the Jewish Labour movement and Labour Friends of Israel? They might have some ideas, and Its important that the Labour & union movement as a whole takes this seriously si its good for them to be made aware of the concerns of individual union (ex) members.

I wonder whether Affinity Union is what you're looking for. I'm considering joining them.

I did have an email from Unison asking why I’d left and was contemplating telling them - but I’m very conscious of good Jew/bad Jew and I’m not sure how seriously I’d be taken.

Was it from a rep in your organisation? I can imagine I would worry about telling them. Perhaps you can write to head office - you could even do it anonymously.

I think so. I generally don’t tell people at work I’m Jewish.

@ChallahPlaiter that's tricky. I never entirely trust the union reps with personal information when everything is so politicised.

It’s worrying. I’m left wing by inclination and a believer in the union movement but there’s no place for someone like me there any more. I’m secular, I believe that the Middle East situation is way too complex to pick a side but right now it feels that if you’re Jewish you’re automatically viewed with suspicion and if you don’t buy into the whole apartheid/genocide/white coloniser shtick, you want to see innocent children dead!
