Glad you can take it with such good humour, @noblegiraffe ! Your efforts to call out antisemitism throughout the months have been really appreciated.

That's one of those sentences I just wasn't expecting to see on this board.

😂😂

@Bowib 😂😂

I have wondered a few times what those not too familiar with Jewish traditions on here must think. It's all just a bit bonkers!

I like the look of your stripey balls.

Ummmm thanks? 🤔😂😂

I’ve been reading this thread for the past couple of days and it’s such a breathe of fresh air amongst all the awfulness on the CITME boards and social media.
I’ve loved reading all the food posts especially! I didn’t have a very Jewish upbringing, so a lot of these dishes are new to me and it’s inspired me to get cooking.
@EllaDisenchanted I really must know, what are chocolate cheese balls? I’ve never heard of these but I feel I have missed out! They look delicious!

Biscuity cheesecake filling, dipped in choc, and decorated with white chocolate.

https://www.kosher.com/recipe/chocolate-cheese-cake-balls-5373 I lost my previous recipe but this one worked well. My previous recipe I spiked with vanilla vodka 😋 in previous years I’ve also had the children make them with me (the cheese ball part, not the chocolate dipping part). I’ve also dipped them in milk choc in the past (tastier but harder to melt and coat nicely)

It can be a bit overwhelming but in a "wow!" sort of way.

And I love cheese, too!

I have literally no idea what is going on. At all. You have a Cheesecake Day? And chocolates with cheese in?

I'm quite familiar with the Old Testament and I must have glazed over during that bit of the food laws?

quantumbutterfly · 12/06/2024 22:11

I also missed the cheesecake references in the OT ( you switch off a bit after all the begetting) but I've heard that christmas is all about the baby cheeses.

Last night and today was the festival of Shavuot. Outside of Israel it is 2 days, so in the UK it is tonight and tomorrow as well. We celebrate receiving the Torah at Sinai. There’s a very strong tradition to eat dairy foods on Shavuot. My menu was pretty pared down compared to a lot of people’s 😅. The men stay up all night learning Torah.

but fyi baby bels are a healthy alternative to chocolate christmas tree decorations...it's fun, fun, fun in our house.

Humdingerydoo · 12/06/2024 22:24

Literally laughing out loud at baby cheeses 😂😂😂😂😂

But yes, what @EllaDisenchanted said! We received the Torah and therefore we eat cheesecake*. It makes perfect sense. Not sure any further explanations are required, it's all very logical and straightforward.

*My (Iraqi) family eats fried filo pastry with cream and date syrup instead🤷🏻‍♀️

EllaDisenchanted · 12/06/2024 22:25

This is the reason I was always taught for why we eat dairy although there are others.
“With the giving of the Torah, the Jews became obligated to observe the kosher laws. As the Torah was given on Shabbat, no cattle could be slaughtered nor could utensils be koshered, and thus on that day they ate dairy.” (Chabad)

the festival is one of the three Shalosh regalim (foot festivals), so it’s very important. One of its other names is Chag HaKatzir, the harvest festival , and we read from Megillas Rus (Ruth). The festival is mentioned in Shemos as chag hakatzir. I have no idea what the translation is of shemos, sorry, but it’s the second book of the Torah. Chabad explain the other names.https://www.chabad.org/library/articlecdo/aid/2836007/jewish/The-Names-of-Shavuot.htm
Chag haBikkurim references the offering of the first fruits of the harvest that were brought to the Beis Hamikdash (temple) known as bikkurim.

ETA Sefer Shemos is Exodus (which is not a translation, Shemos means names)

In what world are baby bels healthier than chocolate?? Chocolate is made from cocoa beans. It's basically one of your five a day.

Honestly, some people 🙄

It’s basically safer for your diet to eat both. Just in case.

food science fact - chocolate and cheese apparently have a complementary GC flavour profiles, although strangely they're natural enemies in the wild .

Nowhere near as complicated to make - it's just the pastry and then you spoon some incredibly heavy clotted cream and date syrup on it and shove it in your face. I think it's called Kahi?!

And yes, always best to eat both cheese and chocolate!

You've spent too long on the CITME board with your insane "facts" 😂😂😂

But I will accept that they are natural enemies in the wild. I've never seen cheese and chocolate together in nature. There must be a reason for that.

Ah that's interesting, I always thought the cheesecake was because of the milk and honey thing. That the Torah was nourishing like milk and sweet like honey, so we should celebrate this by eating nice sweet cheesecake.

Although, I will accept any interpretation that allows for a cheesecake festival tbh.

quantumbutterfly · 12/06/2024 22:45

I have filo and date syrup in my stores, will pop out and get some cream on the way home from work. Might need some hints on the frying of filo pastry.
