Respect to you for your service!

I'm not a serving military personnel or a veteran, but I know a lot of people who were in the army as well as some who were counter-terrorism specialists. Then there's real life experience of terrorist organisations such as PIRA who did target us. Knowing various things about security helps.

Plus I read a TON of material on terrorism, security and counter-terrorism. You should see my bookshelf! Most people just don't understand why I'm so interested in it as its such a niche subject! 🤣

You’re going to love this website.

Here's a thought.

Let's use our space lasers to zap Hamas soldiers with out precision kryptonite technology and walk away with the hostages.

I can't today. I'm too busy running Hollywood and the media and making cheesecakes.

@PurpleChrayn 😂😂😂
I’m out too - also making cheesecake and lasagne. I only have to prep for one day though, so I could theoretically help with the laser on Thursday, as chag is out for me then?

I was an adult before I knew that lasagne outside the Jewish world traditionally has mince meat in it 😄🙈 and I think I was possibly an adult also when I found out mince pies don’t have mince meat, it’s fruit 😂

Yeah, I've read a fair few articles by various experts there including Mike Schmitt. Always interesting and thought provoking.

The bizarre thing is that 'mincemeat' is fruit and spices, with no meat but some fat (suet or a vegetarian replacement).

The meat version is just referred to as 'mince'.

I've come here for relief from the hostage thread.

That’s what I found out! I was so confused 😄 I didn’t know just meat is called mince though. As it’s not kosher, and we obviously don’t celebrate Christmas, it went straight over my head.

Ooooh I must have been in my late teens when I discovered mince pies weren't meaty, and that's despite eating them my whole life. I just never thought about it! I also didn't realise until I was 18ish that chopped liver is made from liver.

EdithStourton · 11/06/2024 10:56

Mince pies can be meaty, so can be treyf in many ways. Traditionally the fat used is suet, and the pastry contains butter, so a kashrus nightmare.

You can get veggie ones easily though. I have made veggie ones in the past.

They are delicious. One of the high points of British cuisine IMHO.

VerityUnreasonble · 11/06/2024 11:25

I don't think I tried a mince pie until my mid 30s, I feel like I missed out. They are delicious with a pile of cream on.

RivkahRose · 11/06/2024 13:30

I feel I was taught that in medieval times mincemeat was spiced with fruit and it evolved from there… I could be wrong though on that!!
I have to say I grew to love mince pies, can’t get on board with mulled wine though 😱

I can’t comment on Mince pies as never had one, but tagine with dried apricots is one of my favorites. I had a fantastic recipe from the kiryat gat calendar years ago for lamb tagine and I lost it 🤯

Although my formerly Christian parent converted many years ago we did celebrate Christmas until I was in m y 20s. So I ate ALOT of mince pies. It was not until I was in my teens I actually noticed they were not actually meat and enquired why that was so. It's just like the fact escaped my notice.

So snap with @Humdingerydoo!

Yep, that's right. Medieval food sometimes seems quite strange to modern palates.

Mulled wine can be horrible and cloying, or it can be spicy and amazing.

Edited to wish chag sameach to all those observing Shavuot.

EllaDisenchanted · 11/06/2024 17:10

Food is basically done. I’m lighting in twenty mins, then I’m out. Made round braided challahs (Shavuot tradition), 2 different lasagnes, 2 white choc cheesecakes, choc cheese balls, soup, and cauliflower/broccoli cheese bake. I’ve got salmon for tomorrow as well, but will cook fresh as I am leaving the oven on Shabbat mode

VerityUnreasonble · 11/06/2024 18:30

I've eaten so much today and yet... those photos still make me think I could manage a little something. If I only had a choc cheese ball.

חג שמח to all. We were meant to have blintzes and applesauce but have devolved to eggs with Philadelphia and chives, or asparagus and mature cheddar. Cheesecake for dessert, of course.

Humdingerydoo · 11/06/2024 22:00

@noblegiraffe thank you for at least trying to explain that it's all propaganda. I know you had posts deleted for it, as did I yesterday, but hopefully they'll maybe at least think a little bit before quoting Hamas in the future? Although they didn't seem overly open to the idea...

You should revert back to blintzes!! So yummy

Having a post deleted for saying that posters were posting terrorist propaganda on a thread where posters were demonstrably posting terrorist propaganda was a bit of an odd one.

It is really worrying about the use of propaganda though - if people can't see it when it's staring them in the face, what hope do we have against more sophisticated stuff?

They did say this election would be dominated by the use of AI and disinformation on social media, and now there are elections coming up in France too. And Trump Shock
