I just popped on to say that there are some voices of moral clarity regarding the hostage rescue. This is from the WSJ yesterday. I encourage you to read the whole thing and share the link if you like, but I'll copy and paste the last two paragraphs to give you a taste.

Blaming Israel for Rescuing Its People - Hamas hid four hostages in a crowded civilian area and fired on rescuers.

Haters of Israel will blame it and excuse Hamas every time, and the media are easily manipulated into playing along. The Hamas figure is likely inflated, and it includes the terrorists killed trying to stop the rescue as well as those who hid the hostages.

Hamas started the war with a massacre, took these hostages and hid them in a crowded civilian area. Then, when Israel came to free them, Hamas responded with heavy fire, including RPGs—yet people are condemning Israel. It makes us wonder if the West has lost the moral discernment and instinct for self-preservation needed to defend itself in a world of killers. Hamas could not survive if not for its enablers around the world.

What I need to know is why is no one talking about salmon cutlets / croquettes? They are the best food. Delicious warm but also cold, excellent snack once the too full to move feeling wears off a bit. Easy to make but never as good as my DGMs.

On a not food related subject. DH got me a ring for my birthday made of yttrium aluminium garnet, which is used for making space lasers. It always cheers me up to look at it when I foolishly venture onto the more depressing corners of the internet.

What even ARE space lasers? I feel this is an area of my Jewish education that has been sadly neglected

They are really mostly used in satellites (although obviously our proper Jewish one is for ultimate power and control) the sort of stone that's in my ring is also being used in the lasers on the Mars rover which I think is very cool <because I'm a geek>.

They are actually really interesting stones because they are doped with other elements, and this particular one will glow bright pink under uv light although it is green / red most of the time.

And my own bit of the Jewish space laser just makes me smile.

Twinkle, twinkle little YAG,
Controlling minds without a lag.
Up above the world so high,
Super bright laser in the sky.

Beautiful ring!

I was just wondering - should we be including pictures of Haniyeh and Sinwar in the calendar? People seem to really like and respect them, so might be a nice little surprise?

noblegiraffe · 10/06/2024 22:59

I think support for proscribed terrorists in the form of raunchy calendars might be against Mumsnet T&Cs.

Good point. Although their T&Cs seem quite fluid if you ask me.

Now I've done it. I've gotten involved in the CITME thread about the hostage rescue. I told myself not to, but I couldn't help myself.

I'm a former US Army officer and have actually studied the LOACs (laws of armed conflict) and couldn't abide the rubbish being thrown about regarding Israeli "war crimes".

Good luck - facts tend not to go down too well over there.

They seem to think Israelis should just remain hostages until the terrorists get what they want. It's weird. But then again I guess certain people said the same about Entebbe - they were genuinely outraged at the time that Israel didn't just wait however long for negotiations to resume after the first round of them failed. It's a very, very strange perspective to take.

Are you a West Point alum? Not American but over the last year or so got incredibly into American college football (as you do!) and have fallen down many a West Point documentary hole 😆beat navy 😉

I can’t with that thread anymore, I had crime hidden for ages and i might go back to that for blood pressure purposes!

That's amazing @MissConductUS !

quantumbutterfly · 10/06/2024 23:26

@MissConductUS thank you. Most of the arguments that come back at you are personal, emotive and unconvincing, so I appreciate when people like yourself and @DownNative keep your cool and just restate the facts.

I've never counted how many times a poster says something along the lines of 'you're a shameful excuse for a human being and I won't engage further' only to do so incessantly like a child that wants the last word. Perhaps I should, though I expect I'd get deleted and banned if I posted the number after each flounce. I wonder if we could have some sort of card, 6 flounces and you get a set of whine glasses.

keenforhelp · 10/06/2024 23:26

Here's a thought.

Let's use our space lasers to zap Hamas soldiers with out precision kryptonite technology and walk away with the hostages.

quantumbutterfly · 10/06/2024 23:42

I really want a space laser ring now. V. pretty.

No, I was commissioned through the ROTC program, but I have family who are members of the long gray line and live close enough to West Point to get over there fairly often for various events, including football games, when I can get tickets.

West Point is absolutely obsessed with football, no doubt about it.

I spend a lot of time on the Ukraine threads, explaining how ground combat and various American weapons work.

Respect to you for your service!

I'm not a serving military personnel or a veteran, but I know a lot of people who were in the army as well as some who were counter-terrorism specialists. Then there's real life experience of terrorist organisations such as PIRA who did target us. Knowing various things about security helps.

Plus I read a TON of material on terrorism, security and counter-terrorism. You should see my bookshelf! Most people just don't understand why I'm so interested in it as its such a niche subject! 🤣

I developed the ability to keep a cool, calm head whenever I was personally attacked by PIRA fanboys. And, of course, you also learn from a young age how important it is to keep your head in the event of a terrorist attack.

It's a skill that can be learned, but you have to be consistent with it. Naturally, it's not for everyone.

Certainly appreciated seeing @MissConductUS posting! 💪
