Given all the unhappiness and heartache elsewhere, I've decided to carve out a little thread for loveliness and joy. Tell me good things, share something funny, pictures of food / recipes also warmly received.

My thing for today is that I could put my Magen David back on! Which I'm very pleased about, I had to take it off because I had a stupid rash on my neck and I felt very naked without it, so it's made me feel more like myself.

Also, this meme which is now stuck in my head but made me laugh.

It was a couple of weeks ago now for Purim. I made the kids' costumes myself because I didn't have enough time to order something and my four year old said "wow mummy, you did such a great job! You must have worked really hard" 🥹.

Just to be clear, I very much did not do a great job and his costume fell apart the second he stepped in to nursery, but it was still such a sweet (albeit fleeting) moment!

EllaDisenchanted · 03/04/2024 23:01

Awww that’s adorable @Humdingerydoo 😊🥰 what was the costume? Verity that’s hilarious, I’ve got hallelujah in my head now 😅
not nachas, but this was hilarious - it’s a matza ball 😄

My DS married my lovely now DIL a month ago to day. The rabbi, who knew DS so well, made the ceremony so personal and so special. The room was full of people who loved them, the dinner was amazing, the hora was danced. It was all beautiful.

VerityUnreasonble · 03/04/2024 23:21

I love all of these! I'm the least creative person but the year I actually made my DD a costume is still talked about (with fondness - mostly!)

Blessings and success to your DS and Dil @SpuytenDuyvil

Thank you very much, ladies. We are so happy.😘

Mazel tov!!

25milesfromhome · 03/04/2024 23:45

This is a lovely thread, I’m enjoying everyone’s posts. @EllaDisenchanted I did a very unattractive snort laugh when that matzo ball popped up on my Instagram earlier.

This was my recent wonky first attempt at a seven strand. I clearly need more practice but it made me (and the people eating it) happy.

Not unattractive at all! I would eat that with pleasure.

You inspired me to look for my magen david necklace charm. Turns out I don't have one, I have a heart with Shalom inside 😂Clearly haven't worn it for years, so I gave it a clean, and now I need a chain.

EllaDisenchanted · 04/04/2024 13:08

I’m mainly wearing a hostage necklace though
this is my shalom necklace

There’s generally a bit of strategic smushing at the end.

VerityUnreasonble · 04/04/2024 17:20

I might adopt the phrase "strategic smushing" to cover a variety of things in life! It feels very useful.

Both of those are beautiful @EllaDisenchanted

I'm off work today (yet somehow still accidentally spent an hour on my laptop Hmm) which has meant I've been able to catch up on some podcasts, hangout with DS and do some shopping. I was supposed to be food shopping but have instead bought myself new shoes and a notebook for DD with the phrase "not my circus, not my monkeys" on the front which I think is a Polish saying? But merrily adopted as it is so very fitting for so many things!

I pinch the strands of the braid together at each end and then tuck the pointy ends underneath. It makes the loaf bake more evenly because it is more uniform. Another trick I use is to pull the loaf out half way through, cover the areas where the white is showing with more egg wash and then finish off the baking

Ooh second egg wash is very clever!

Thanks, @VerityUnreasonble. I got the idea from a lady named Tory Avey. Her website is full of recipes and techniques.

Dilbertian · 05/04/2024 10:01

@SpuytenDuyvil you're needed on the Challah SOS thread 😄

This is a lovely thread.

Good for her! Although I'm sorry she has had a rough time.

Gives me an appropriate meme to share for today:

I'm reviving this thread as I feel like it's needed!

Youngest child, who recently started at a Jewish school, randomly said "Mummy, I thanked Hashem for sending the plagues to the Egyptians instead of us" and I wasn't quite sure how to respond 😂 Bearing in mind he shared this with us in the car on the way to swimming lessons on Shabbat because we're not even remotely religious.

Also, if given the chance my children will always choose to share a (single!) bed with one another and it's the sweetest thing hearing them giggling together before eventually falling asleep ❤️ (/one of them accidentally elbowing the other in the face and tears erupting from both because one is upset about being hurt, the other upset about hurting their sibling - despite purposely doing so an hour earlier 🤪)

BeretInParis · 09/02/2025 09:27

Loving the resurrected thread @Humdingerydoo and the cuteness of your kids.

I had a little sort of inverse naches this week with DD1 who'd been moved down from the top set for Spanish. She was really upset. I'm proud of her for caring. She trips through life with such insouciance usually that this is a shift for her. Of course I supported her and we've come up with a plan on what she must do to cement her Spanish learning and I could see her determination. I loved seeing that spark, that fire in her. It will serve her well.

Humdingerydoo · 09/02/2025 10:03

It is definitely better to learn how to deal with set-backs while still at school than not experiencing them until you're an adult and you no longer have the same level of support to get you through them.

Good luck to your daughter, @BeretInParis , and I hope she keeps making you proud! She's lucky to have such a supportive parent :)
