Earworm! It's from Tehillim

The first sentence and a half are going round and round in my head, but I can't remember the rest.

It's Psalm 115, from verse 16 onwards. www.sefaria.org/Psalms.115.16?lang=bi

Does anyone have a link to the melody, or to a recording?

Oh I know this - it's in Hallel, isn't it.

hashaMAYIM shaMAYIM doodoo DOO DOO DOO.

I will have a look now for a recording.

Dilbertian · 30/11/2023 12:26

That's BeTseit Yisrael. But thanks, because you have reminded me that somewhere at the back of the Cupboard of Doom I may still have some old CDs of Hebrew songs. Probably worth a rummage.

The hashamayim bit is part of betseit yisrael! It’s about half way through

Dilbertian · 30/11/2023 20:29

Not in the version I know. I'll have a listen.

Had a listen. Nope, definitely not in Betseit Yisrael.

I've only ever heard it as part of hallel singing, but not Betzais Yisroel, it's in Hashem Zachranu Yevarech. I found this version on you tube
it's not 100% exactly the same as the way I sing it, but close enough. The line you are looking for is close to the end, but the tune is repetitious.
Funny, while I was looking I came across a musical hallel recording, and they put the words to Carlebach's 'return again', which is one of my favourite songs (the Yehuda Green version ) https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=586929607&rlz=1C5CHFA_enGB808GB810&tbm=vid&sxsrf=AM9HkKlLD7FI03dZoZdF9d3rn_aluc5OQw:1701425855258&q=hallel+singing&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjugdudge6CAxXccfEDHelzB6QQ8ccDegQICxAH&biw=1041&bih=691&dpr=2#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:996a4ea2,vid:-4czEkn98lw,st:0 (13 mins in)

Wonder whether you can help me find some more videos or audio tracks of the parts of prayers that are fun to sing. I try to sing them to my very elderly mum, but I can sing with a congregation - I’m no soloist! DM asks “Shall I sing it correctly for you?” (and I go “Yes!” in my head, because that’s the whole point, to get her to engage) but then she runs out of memory.

Traditional Ashkenazi melodies. Polish/Hasidic/Israeli/UK influences.

I would say these tunes are closer to the Yomim noraim davening tunes but beautifully done with harmonies. I don’t think it’s quite what you’re looking for so I’ll keep looking. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=X8xypUir4S8&list=RDX8xypUir4S8&start_radio=1&pp=ygUPRGF2ZW5pbmcgaGFsbGVsoAcB
Do you specifically want hallel or any part of davening ?

these are all tunes that I grew up singing

struggling to find a good version of the traditional lecha dodi https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wEc7XVYwssM&list=RDwEc7XVYwssM&start_radio=1&pp=ygUUbGVjaGEgZG9kaSBhc2hrZW5hemmgBwE%3D. Feel like it needs a proper choir amount of people to sound right. It’s not just one person singing it in shul!

anything specific you can think of?

gingergran · 02/11/2025 12:59

Search for Avi Scharwtz. He sings a range of Jewish prayers very beautifully,

I particularly like his version of adon olam (אדון עולם) and avinu shebashmayim (אבינו שבשמיים)

Dilbertian · 02/11/2025 14:12

I don’t recognise the first two, but the Yevarech was exactly what I was looking for originally. I got goosebumps listening to it! Thank you! My current community do not sing it this way. We have a new Rabbi…I might suggest this.

Now to listen to the others.

I don’t quite know what I’m looking for. DM grew up Strictly orthodox, and brought us up relaxed Modern Orthodox (United Synagogue, modern Jewish primary school). There was always music at home. Either DF’s classical music or DM’s Hebrew singing. Something would occur to us and DM would sing an appropriate song. None of that is happening any more in their house.

When I began this thread, DM and I had been chatting in Hebrew about the beautiful weather and the happiness it brought because DM could go outside. It sparked recollection of the song Hashamayim Shamayim L’Adonai- but there we got stuck. That sort of thing keeps happening. Maybe I should make a note every time.

I want to try to bring back those warm memories and that engagement with life.

DGF sang like a stick on railings, but I vividly remember him singing Shalom Aleichem (with his own mistakes that I had to unlearn!) and Al Shlosha Devarim (which I can’t remember how to sing at all).

@Dilbertian also try the Shabbaton choir. Their music should be familiar to your DM as they sing traditional United Synagogue style music
