Bringing a large sum of money into the UK from overseas

My father is getting quite old, he has me as a beneficiary on. His US brokerage account. Will there be any issue with bringing my inheritance into the UK? If he wants to gift me money now, would that be an issue?

I assume they might check for money laundering…but otherwise there are no taxes to pay.

Does anyone know if this is correct?

I had to bring some stocks over from the US for a deceased client once, it was a 4 year nightmare, the IRS are awful and slow as molasses.
It depends on how the portfolio or stock it is held, if it is a US stock held within a UK brokerage account (say for example with Barclays) it should be fairly straightforward. If it is held with an American bank expect a long winded process to get it to the UK. Where is he resident and where is he domiciled? There may be income tax, capital gains tax or inheritance tax to pay and you would need to clear all three taxes with the IRS and the Inland Revenue before they (the brokerage) will release any funds.
Also don't forget the 7 year rule for gifts in the UK too.

Money is in the US. He is a US citizen living in Latin America.

It would be below the US inheritance threshold. Inherited stocks in the USA have a step up cost basis on the day the person died. I would sell the stock and look to transfer the cash to the UK.

I’m trying to figure out if the uk would try to tax me in so
me way. If so, I’d keep it off shore.

The UK won’t tax you on an inheritance. But I have no idea about any Latin American countries! Is his intention to live out his final days in Latin America? I ask as that is usually one of the factors used to establish domicile.

Yes, he does. 😕
