Died before state pension age

Can anyone advise on this please?

My friend's husband died three years ago at 60 years old, so well before retirement age. What will happen to the contributions he made to his state pension during his lifetime? Will my friend be able to claim them?

I've googled this lots of times, but don't seem to be able to find the answer!

Mt mum inherited my dad's serps and record, but that was 20 years ago. I think it was scrapped when the new state pension came in.

My husband died aged 59 and I don’t receive any of his state pension. I understood that it’s because I had accrued enough NI years to qualify for my own full state pension, but trying to get accurate information is very complicated.

I think the person who dies had to be entitled to state pension before 2016, which my dad would have been . My mum gets a full state pension as well as an addition from my dad's. She also has her own NHS pension

Thank you so much for all your comments, it has pretty much confirmed what I suspected!

As others have said, sadly your friend is unable to claim her late spouse's SERPS/S2P contributions as he would have reached retirement age after 2016. This is the wording that is relevant:-

You cannot inherit your spouse or civil partner’s Additional State Pension if your spouse or civil partner died on or after 6 April 2016 and reached (or would have reached) State Pension age on or after 6 April 2016. (the details can be found here:- https://www.gov.uk/additional-state-pension/inheriting#:~:text=The%20maximum%20you%20can%20inherit,on%20their%20date%20of%20birth.)

Others have mentioned applying for a bereavement payment. Sadly, she's too late for that now if he died 3 years ago.

I do hope your friend has been able to move on with her life and that she has the financial resources she needs for her future.

Additional State Pension

Additional State Pension, also known as the State Second Pension or SERPS, is extra money on top of your basic State Pension.
