I've come across some old paper work of my late parents mentioning shares. I've called the company who are sending me some forms to fill in.
Can the number of shares change? The paper work says they had 308, the person on the phone said 199.

Also I've tried looking up how much each share is worth but I don't understand what I'm looking at. Can anyone here help?

The company is called Intercontinental hotels group.

I need to see how much they are worth per share now and also on the date of my mums death 29/11/03

I'd be really grateful of any help with this.

Yeah they could have sold some

Igmum · 12/06/2023 11:23

Your parents could have sold some or the company could have consolidated the shares, which would have changed their holdings. Share prices are usually quoted in pence - just multiply by the number you hold to see the value.

Hope this helps OP

Thankyou, it helps find todays value. Doesn't go back 19 years.

2003
IHG is born
Six Continents plc splits into two, creating a separate hotels and soft drinks company named InterContinental Hotels Group plc (IHG), and a retail business called Mitchells & Butlers plc. The split completes in April 2003 and IHG becomes a standalone company

This might be a possible reason why the share amount changed. I imagine once you have sent the paperwork to confirm your mothers death/you are the beneficiary then they might be able to discuss your case further with you?

I see what you mean about that website only going back 5 years, sorry.

In addition a company can do a stock split or a reverse stock split - both will change the number of shares held.

This makes some sense now, my Mum used to work for Mitchell's & Butlers. Thankyou

I used to work these histories out by looking at the company's accounts and annual returns (now called confirmation statements) on the Companies House website. It's free to look, but quite difficult if you're not used to looking at these things.

They were about £16.85 on Dec 1st 2003 and then had stock splits of the below along the way which may account for the change in holding sizes if yours were impacted

At least the Investor Relations have identified your holding which is a good start

wobytide · 13/06/2023 13:22

That data was from Yahoo finance so may not be all accurate as the split figures suggest your holding would be less so let their Registrar guide you potentially
