Shares - how do I get info

I have POA for someone who I know has M&S shares. He knows roughly how many. I have a shareholder reference number, and that's it.

How do I find out exactly how many he has and get hold of formal documents? This is for his Will.

I have googled but don't understand the process - are they bought through a company rather than from M&S?
