AVC to pension

Looking to top up my pension, what am I missing though as I can't see why I would be better off doing AVC rather than say just saving in normal isas for example.

Because an AVC is tax free money and when it grows tax free you get to keep 85p in the £1

An ISA is after tax AND national insurance. It is therefore a smaller pot.

Compounding on the larger starting amount rolls up more quickly.

Pensions are able to be left to your kids outside your estate, possibly tax free.

ISA can be spent today, pensions over 55 (or 57 after 2028). That's good and bad.

What do you mean by 'normal' isa's BTW. Hopefully not cash.

Thanks for that, I clearly need to read up. I suppose I did really mean cash Isa but fixed ones.

Not the type whose name I don't remember that are aimed at pension provision.

But get a bad press

Stocks and Shares ISA's get a bad press? Eh? Really? I'm not sure where you read, but ISA's get a great press. Tax efficient, inheritable, flexible.

Cash ISA's are TOTALLY inappropriate for pension savings. However if you don't know about investmenting you do need to read up before buying anything else. Drawing out money when markets are low is what causes problems and people panic when they don't understand what's going on.

I would suggest an AVC chosen for you (not added years) would seem a simpler option.

no not stocks and shares ISAs there's a 3rd type, limited in offerings and I think disappearing from the market soon - sorry I really can't remember the name at the moment.
Yes I think AVCs monthly from my salary is the way to go.

Lifetime Isa is what I was thinking of
