Use a passive, Vanguard do a good low cost UK income tracker. L&G are also good. An ETF is also an option.

thanks so much. what's an ETF?

Exchange Traded Fund. I would suggest that unless you understand what you're buying they're not for you (they can be simple or very complex in structure so vary in risk).

Another recommendation for the low cost L&G index tracker

Thanks! It is all so complicated...

It is really complicated! I used to use Hargreaves Lansdown but couldn't keep up with all their articles. I switched to SmarterInvestment who I find easier as they just rank everything in comparison tables. The vanguard and L&G trackers look pretty good.

try AXA, special offer of no management fees for a year. Faff to open but can all be managed online once you've done it.

funds have fees but they have plenty of trackers at 0.15% or less.
