How do I find an independent financial advisor?

Just that really. We live overseas and are looking for an independent financial advisor to help us sort out our finances and plan for the future. I have no idea where to begin, as I have no recommendations. How do we begin to find someone, and how do you know that they are reputable?

Any help greatly received. Thanks.

Most UK based IFAs won't have a clue about tax laws outside the UK, so it really depends on what your tax residency and future plans. There are 'international' financial planners, but they tend to cater for the top end of the market, and charge through the nose. Are you you overseas permanently, or are you planning to return to the UK at some point?

If you are in a country where there are a reasonable number of ex pats, there will be ex pat financial advisers. Do you have other ex pat friends who could advise?

If you're in a more isolated place, you'll need to select a UK company which is competent at understanding your ex pat status. There are a few of them around. Google is your friend here.
