How many embryo transfer attempts until you had a successful birth?

I’ve just done my first egg retrieval and we got x2 day 5’s but waiting to do FET. So i’m just curious for those who have successfully given birth from IVF, how many embryo transfers did it take?

Success rate per transfer is primarily determined by maternal age. And then whatever is the reason for doing IVF.

MinPinSins · 16/02/2026 19:51

30 at time of retrieval, 4 transfers for baby #1

2 egg collections - embryo transfer number 3, currently 18 weeks x

2 egg collections resulting in a very lucky 6 euploid embryos, 2nd FET transfer worked and he was born this morning (!)

Oh wow congratulations Orangewillow 💙

So far one transfer from a 2021 collection, ended in a chemical. 1st collection from 2025 ended with no fertilisation. Second collection of 2025 gave me 2 embryos, one was day 5 and didnt stick, one was day 6 and ended in miscarriage at 7 weeks. About to start 1st stim cycle for 2026. Though 12yrs ago when I was much younger it took one stim cycle and first transfer and we had our baby in 2014. Second time we did ivf was was 7 yrs later and we did 1 stim cycle and got 4 embryos but they either didnt survive thaw or didnt stick. Then did a second stim cycle and got 4 embryos and from the first transfer from that cycle we had our baby in 2022, then did another transfer and we got our angel baby in 2023 , then did another transfer which didnt work in the same year then one more transfer again in the same year and had our baby in 2024. So to have our baby in 2022 it took 5 embryos whether that was losing one or two at thaw or having them transferred and not sticking and to get our 2024 baby it took 3 transfers.

2 egg collections at the age of 35.
1st gave 1 embryo for fresh transfer and was unsuccessful.
2nd gave 2 embryos - the first was a fresh transfer again and only lasted to 6 weeks of pregnancy.
Embryo 2 was a FET when I was 36 and DC is now 3 years old.

Wishing you all the best with it 💐

Transfer #4 was our lucky star- our baby boy!

  • 1st egg collection aged 33- day 5 fresh transfer failed
  • 2nd transfer (FET) aged 34- failed
  • 2nd egg collection aged 34- day 5 fresh transfer failed
  • 3rd egg collection aged 34- day 5 fresh transfer SUCCESS!

Egg collections 1 and 3 gave me very good embryos. Egg collection 2 was a weird one- bad results and we will never know why.

There can be SO many factors. Here's what I noted during my journey.

  • First two transfers I had a polyp that I should've got removed but I was too desperate to have a transfer. Polyps can interfere in the uterus by creating a hostile environment.
  • My 2nd egg collection brought bad results- we will never know why. I did everything 'right'- vitamins, acupuncture, was healthy, increased my stims... but I think I experienced the IVF fact that some rounds just don't go well. This hit me very very hard. I just found it so unfair and it made no sense.
  • My 3rd egg collection went the best out them all- and we used our best graded fresh embryo resulting in my son. This round, the clinic threw the kitchen sink at my protocol- upped all my stims, upped the progesterone post transfer, gave me double trigger shot AND I was put on Prednisone for the very first time. This is a steroid that lowers your immune system incase your immune system is too active and could be attacking an embryo in your body. I also took 3 month break before this as well as having reiki.

Who ever knows with IVF- even my IVF Dr told me that the reproductive system is like another brain, it is sooo complex- Dr's can only learn as much as they can but the womb can do weird and wonderful things that Dr's can't even predict.

GOOD LUCK. That's great news re your first round.

PS. I have 2 friends who had babies after their FIRST round! x

zirafica · 20/02/2026 11:38

Had one EC and our first FET with a euploid has worked - currently 14 weeks, just hitting the second tri!

sirensong · 20/02/2026 13:12

@zirafica love a first King's transfer success. What did you do in terms of prep? Antibiotics? I have an appointment to discuss all that coming up but I think their default is to do nothing. Veering between thinking I've got a good chance and then viewing it as stood on the edge of the precipice flipping coins for the outcome!

zirafica · 20/02/2026 13:32

@sirensong HELLO! literally no prep from clinic at all! I did a natural modified so started the pessaries like five days before my transfer, before that just vit d + omegas + coq10 (I know jury’s out on this one but I kept 100mg daily up) + folate + magnesium/calcium and that was it? Didn’t take a prenatal, took all of those separately. I also took 3g creatine daily but I’ve been on it for months before so did to want to quit! I stopped it about a month ago cause I was mixing it with some additional magnesium that started causing stomach upset so I completely got off the mix 😂

AmberRose26 · 21/02/2026 07:57

3 egg collections, 7th transfer I am 21 weeks 🤞🏽🙏✨..the 6 prior transfers - 2 failed and 4 ended in miscarriage , had two naturally conceived miscarriages also ! Good luck

sirensong · 21/02/2026 10:00

@AmberRose26 were any PGTA embryos or were they all untested?

AmberRose26 · 21/02/2026 13:15

1st round wasn’t tested ,2nd round we didn’t test our fresh transfer and got two blasts to freeze from that, but we went straight to another round to bank embryo due to my age by then and we got the two frozen from 2 nd round we had left tested with the blasts with the 3rd round .. out of 6 blasts - 2 were euploid and the 1st euploid we put in is this one now I am pregnant with! So we have 1 eupolid still frozen left, I know most clinics don’t recommend testing first round but I would to save heart ache and money, and also I recommend sperm dna fragmentation testing even if your partners sperm perameters look normal , do it anyways and ICSI then helped us i believe, ivf round all failed for us .. best of luck x

sirensong · 21/02/2026 13:49

@AmberRose26 that's great. Asked as I'm a similar age and have already done my banking with PGTA. Wary as I know euploids also fail but also hopeful.

AmberRose26 · 21/02/2026 14:19

@sirensong no problem , I really do wish you all the best of luck !

camelinastorm · 21/02/2026 17:58

@Charlierb I am 8 weeks it was my 7th transfer, unexplained reasons for all the failures, was on every medication you can imagine but no reason to why they all miscarried at less than 5 weeks, I’m hoping this one sticks around as it’s th furthest we have got with an ivf pregnancy ( I have had a child naturally but hubby was diagnosed with mfi 7 years ago so we went down the ivf route

TheIceBear · 24/02/2026 13:04

Did pgta at 37 and my first transfer worked. He’s 8 months old now

HappyMamma2023 · 25/02/2026 09:49

IVF transfer successful first time aged 32, fresh transfer. Male infertility and ICSI. Little boy is almost 3 years old. We plan to try IVF again to get a sibling. Good luck

ACR7 · 25/02/2026 21:17

I was 37. Had 5 eggs retrieved, only one embryo, transferred on day 3 and was a successful pregnancy. Now she’s 20months

VioIetMoon · 05/03/2026 18:23

I was fortunate that my first transfer worked ( I was 38)
I then did a second retrieval a few months ago at 40 and got pregnant naturally , despite being on ovitrelle i released an egg during stims but that ended in a mmc.
Since that ive been getting pregnant naturally every month but all loses.
Were planning on another retrieval in the coming months but just found out im pregnant again so will wait and see.
We didnt test , our clinic doesnt believe theres enough evidence behind pgta testing to support it . They just use some AI screening to predict implantation.
Im waiting to be referred to recurrent miscarriage clinic but found out last week im possibly diabetic which may be causing my loses. I have to wait to get that under control before our next round .

Evi83 · 05/03/2026 19:16

5 rounds of IVF, 5 transfers (1 was frozen), 1 baby! (I always had fairly low numbers on egg retrieval).

AliceAbsolum · 11/03/2026 20:51

1 fresh own egg cycle - fail
1 fresh donor cycle - fail
1 fresh donor cycle - miscarriage
1 fet donor transfer - baby!

7 years in all from ttc to birth. 7 embryos transfered in total.
