Azoospermia - are we wasting our time waiting for the NHS?

Hello, we are just looking for some advice from anyone who's maybe been through something like this before?

My husband was diagnosed with azoospermia in July 2025 and had this confirmed with a second test result in October. We still don't know if it's obstructive or non-obstructive.

Apparently fertility couldn't refer him to andrology without the gynaecology consultant seeing us - we did this at the start of December. They got him to do a blood test. Then said he needed to have a scan before they could put the andrology referral through.

They've messed up the scan referral so 6 weeks later he still isn't even on the waiting list for the scan!

We're thinking about just paying for the scan privately to get it done so the andrology referral can be done.

But, we have no idea what the wait list is like for andrology and we are guessing the NHS funding will need to be cleared before we even get an appointment - so presumably a while.

At this point we've known he needed to see an andrologist since the summer and a referral still hasn't been made, let alone an appointment.

It feels like we should stick with the NHS because then if they can treat it, it will be funded. But is it going to take so long that we may as well try and pay for a private andrologist all together? (We'd be looking at London)

Call up whichever department you've been referred to for the scan once the admin for that is corrected and find out the approximate waiting list time. You can also ask to be slotted in if there are cancellations.

If it looks like there's a bottleneck for the scans then yes, consider getting one done privately. You can send it to the NHS gynaecologist to speed things along.
