Lots of follicles - OHSS

Good afternoon all,

I have had my final scan before egg collection today and have been told there are lots of follicles (27 they can see) so I am at risk of OHSS and will be having a freeze all cycle.

I have also been given a different trigger injection (decapeptyl)

It has really thrown me,has anyone been in a similar situation?

thanks in advance xx

Hello! I had this situation but didn’t know until after EC when they collected 38 eggs. They couldn’t see the right ovary when they scanned me. They said if they had seen it they would have given me a different trigger (presumably the one you’ve been given) honestly I wish I’d known ahead of time that it was going to end up being freeze all as it would have given me time to get my head round it. It was all good in the end because we ended up with 14 embryos but I do wish I’d known if it was inevitable anyway.

Oh hi @Cosyseason1234 didnt realise it was you! Sorry you’ve already heard my story on the other thread, probably not v helpful. Hope you’re ok!

thanks so much for replying @MrsBP15 so pleased for your BFP ❤️
I knew freeze all was a potential but I have sobbed today when they told me 😂 trying to see a positive in it that I get a break from the psychological bashing that is IVF. Did you feel emotional when they told you it was freeze all cycle? I’ve been googling (as you do) but can’t really see much about how common etc it is.
14 embryos is absolutely amazing! Just about to do my trigger and got EC on Wednesday so hoping for some good numbers 🤞

Hi, I went to a freeze all cycle due to other reasons - my lining thinned slightly. It was frustrating at the time, but honestly in hindsight I’m really glad I got the break. It’s pretty full on as it is. Good luck for EC!

@Zypig thank you for sharing, really good point. I think to be fair mentally and physically a break will be good.

thank you lovely it’s super early days but we’ve got a scan next week so we’ll see! I honestly wasn’t that upset, a bit disappointed maybe. I really felt like I would take a delay to get those results. I know of people who have done multiple egg collections and only ended up with one or two embryos. Just think, the likelihood is you’ll never have to do this part again! So many people would do anything for that option. I know they say there isn’t much in it but I do think there is slightly more success from frozen transfers. That’s just going off anecdotal stories and a lot of stuff I’ve seen on here the past two years. And hey it worked for us! I know its hard because it’s more waiting and that’s the worst part of all this but I found trying to find the positives in it helpful ❤️

@MrsBP15 you are so right! We can have a nice Christmas and hopefully my body will be ready in Jan (and not full of hormones, I have found stims fine but honestly am so emotional 😂) good luck for your scan ❤️

Hi OP,

I can't remember how many follicles I had (it was lots!)
I had 23 eggs collected and was at risk of OHSS, (17 mature, 10 made it to day 5 blast)

Went ahead with a fresh transfer. ( We were NHS funded, 1 fresh, 1 frozen, and this was our first round, so don't know if that influenced the decision)

I did end up developing severe OHSS and had to stay in hospital for a couple of days. It was a very unpleasant experience, my ovaries increased to the size of mango's, and I gained 8kg ish of water weight.

On the positive side, it was a successful transfer and currently pregnant, almost in my third trimester!

Cosyseason1234 · 26/11/2024 15:07

Hi @Goldpanther thanks so much for sharing your story. I am so sorry you went through this,OHSS sounds awful. Absolutely fantastic news that you got good results though!

I have taken the trigger shot that isn’t HCG so fingers crossed (from what I’ve googled 😂) it should massively reduce my risk of OHSS and I can go ahead with a frozen transfer when everything has settled down.

Hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well ❤️

Yes, apparently the HCG makes OHSS much worse! If I could have opted to have a freeze all and transferred one a bit later and avoided OHSS I would choose that option with hindsight.
