Only 5 fertilised eggs, so scared none will make it

Hi all,

This is my first time posting here - and my first IVF cycle. TTC for almost 2 years, never even a whiff of a BFP. I'm 37, DP is 46 and has two kids from a previous relationship (youngest is 11). We had IVF with ICSI for slight male factor (1-2% morphology). They collected 13 eggs yesterday but only 8 were mature and only 5 of those fertilised. We won't hear anything more until day 5, which is next Tuesday. I know 5 isn't a terrible number but the suspense of wondering how many - if any at all - will make it to Tuesday is already killing me! If any ladies out there have good news stories with similar stats I'd love to hear them...

My first cycle (also ICSI) 6 eggs harvested, 4 fertilised. 2 day ET & when we arrived they told us only 2 were viable. Double ET (initially twin pregnancy but lost one at 9 wks) my 6ft, gorgeous lump is now 17.
The waiting is so stressful and you drive yourself mad with “what if”, it’s only natural, I hope all goes well. Good luck! Flowers

I was so shocked when only 5 eggs were collected during my last cycle. But with ICSI all of them fertilised and all made it to day 5 blastocysts! I will have a FET soon. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you x

2 egg collections
Only 5 eggs collected yes each time
ONLY 1 FERTILISED EACH TIME (thought it was over then)
Pregnant from both (1 loss and and 1 beautiful bouncing daughter :) it really does only take 1 and you have 5 in the running (I would relax a little if I was you as that’s a good please to be in

Good luck x

@raxel there are a bunch of us over on the August ivf thread with a lovely little support crew going if you want to join us for moral support. I'm penciled in for embryo transfer on Monday and am also really stressed about my embryos making it

raxel · 22/08/2020 08:07

Thank you all so much for taking time to reply, I love hearing about your successes! @Matilda128 amazing that all five of yours made it to day 5, they were obviously great quality. @shazzz1xx you’re right - your experience shows it really does only take one 😀

I was ecstatic when my clinic collected 20 eggs then so upset to find out the next day that “only” 7 fertilised. I googled like crazy for the next 5 days to find positive stories. A lower fertilisation rate doesn’t seem to be an indicator of how many make it to blast. For some people they all do. Fingers crossed for you.

My worrying was for nothing because we ended up with 4x 5 day blasts. I was thrilled with that. One is now smiling up at me on my lap and the other 3 are in the freezer.

Elasticate · 22/08/2020 10:29

15 eggs collected
Only 1 fertilised normally so decided on a 3 day transfer which was a success and resulted in dc!

Best of luck for Tuesday. Hope you can find something to distract yourself over the weekend.

Ijustlikefood · 22/08/2020 12:06

3 eggs collected, all 3 fertilised and ended up with 2 5 day blasts
Froze due to Covid , first FET failed , currently in 2ww for the second , blood test Monday

FingersXssd83 · 22/08/2020 13:24

I've had three egg collections where they got 10 (5 mature) 6 and then 5 eggs.

We got 3 blastocysts each time apart from the last cycle when we froze 4 on day 3.

Transferred a total of 7 embryos.

The last (4th) transfer worked. I'm now 39 weeks pregnant. Hold on in there and keep going. Wishing you the best of luck x x

Ilikeviognier · 22/08/2020 20:17

2 eggs collected. 1 embryo. Very very low expectations.

But- I bfp and he is now 5.5 years old!!

It’s true that it only takes one!!!

raxel · 23/08/2020 19:48

@Betsyboo87 what a rollercoaster! 20 is so many, I can totally imagine how disappointed you must have felt that 'only' 7 fertilised. Clearly they were great quality, though, and it's really reassuring to hear that you achieved such a positive outcome.

@Elasticate and @Ilikeviognier Wow, what little champs your just-takes-one ones were! These are such lovely illustrations of how true the "just takes one" phrase really is.

@FingersXssd83 I'm so glad you got a happy ending at the end of what sounds like a long journey. I found just this round really tough, so much respect for all those who do it many times over to realise their dream.

@Ijustlikefood GOOD LUCK!! Everything crossed for a bfp for you tomorrow x

Hi @raxel I hope you managed a relaxing weekend despite the wait.

This thread caught my eye - I had 16 good sized follicles, retrieved 10 eggs, 7 were mature and 5 fertilised. At which point I panicked a little too.

Our day three update reported that all 5 were growing, and looking good quality... but that some drop off still expected between day 3-5. Yesterday was day 5, we transferred 1, and froze 1, both 6BB. I'm now waiting for the call to see if any of the stragglers caught up - one was looking likely :)

For context, I'm 41 with good AMH, and we've been TTC for 3 years, most of which was treating MFI. It's our first cycle, and we were ICSI too.

Good luck with your update later!

raxel · 25/08/2020 11:15

@Lepatz Thank you for sharing your experience - and great news on your transfer, I really hope that gives you your BFP. It must be reassuring to have another in the freezer too, but fingers crossed the transferred one sticks.

How did you get on with your stragglers? I just had the Day 5 call from the embryologist: they've frozen one today - which is good news, of course. The remaining four are all actually still developing, but just not at the right stage yet. She said two are early blastos, one is a slightly more developed (but not yet expanded) blasto and the last one is a real straggler and not yet a blasto of any sort. I really don't know whether to be excited or disappointed! Is there still a reasonable chance that any of the others will catch up by tomorrow, do you think? x

Congratulations @Ijustlikefood fantastic news!

@raxel I got one more frozen yesterday- so 3 out of 5 - all 6BBs :) Good luck!!

Betsyboo87 · 25/08/2020 15:41

I’ve just realised I said I got 4x 5 day blasts. Actually two were frozen on day 6. So yes they can catch up. Great news you have one frozen already.

Ivf1sttime · 20/11/2021 10:52

Hello
This is my first time doing Ivf so I had my egg retrieval yesterday they collected 16 eggs and only 8 were mature enough and only 5 fertilised is this good numbers or bad. Just worried now for the next few days waiting..

Shazzz1xx · 20/11/2021 22:07
