What do you tell children who want to know why you don't have kids?

I have been asked a few times now by children why I don't have any kids and just tend to waffle something but feel my answers don't quite cut it as I recently found myself being interrogated by a curious 6 year old who wanted to know if we "just don't want children" and why did we not have any and was not in the least bit satisfied with the answers I gave.

I don't mind children asking as there is no malice intended and they are just curious but I'd like to give a better answer than "umm I'm not sure" and definitely won't be telling kids about our miscarriages and fertility problems so what do you all say?

Hmm it's a tough one, when my little boy asks why he doesn't have any siblings yet I have found the answer that has satisfied him best is 'we don't always get what we want straight away, but we hope you will one day and we just have to be patient for now' - he now proudly tells people this

Perhaps a similar version 'we would like to have children, but sometimes we have to be patient and wait for the things we want' would work. It's best to not beat around the bush and raise too many other questions with your answer.

You could just say ' I don't.' They're not being malicious, but you don't have to explain yourself either.

Because we can't, some people just can't have them, even though they want to. I think it's good for children to know the honest answer, unless it would make you feel alkward or feel you were revealing more then you wanted to.

"Ooh I'm too busy to have a baby at the moment"

"I am going to have a baby in a few years when I have more time and money"

"I'm going to have a baby when I'm older"

Those kind of things usually satisfy a kid.

I used to say God didn't send me any yet.

I'm a religious person though so it worked for me.
