Anthem for England?

Unlike the Scots and Welsh, an English team or athlete doesn't have an English anthem to stir their blood at sporting occasions, just the United Kingdom 'God Save The Queen'....

'Jerusalem' has been put forward for the Commonwealth Games apparently but surely we can do better than that? What stirring national tune would you like to see Wayne Rooney not knowing the words to in future?

I love Jerusalem and would be very happy with it as the English anthem. It's a whole huge amount better than 'Swing Low' which has become the England rugby fans anthem for some unknown reason. (Possibly to do with few words and easy tune...)

I think they should have Pretty Vacant by the Sex Pistols.

I like Swing Low, Jerusalem is a horrible boring dirge worse then GSTQ.

Jerusalem is also a religious song, and while we might be "happy" having an existing religious song as an anthem bringing in a new one would be very controversial.

I really like Land of Hope and Glory.

Ah yes... 'wider still and wider, are thy boundaries set'... Stay right where you are Wales and look out Belgium we're coming to get you!

I rather liked Billy Connolly's suggestion that we go for the jaunty theme tune to the Archers to put a spring in the team's step. Even Wayne couldn't muff the words for that one.

I have to go with 'Land of Hope & Glory, its rather uplifting, and very catchy.

Never mind anthem. When do we get own parliament?

Chil1234 · 27/06/2010 10:19

More politicians... yes, that's what the country needs....

Mitchy - possibly when the English regions show the slightest interest in devolution. The North East had the opportunity and turned it down overwhelmingly a few years ago.
