fox attacks

Does anybody else think there is something not quite right about the so called fox attack in London? I have always known foxes to be timid and certainly not likely to climb up two lots of stairs. There is more to this than meets the eye

There was a quote from some fox expert who said, in his 40 years of working with foxes, he had only twice heard of a fox attacking a human - the first turned out to be an alsation and the second a cat. I agree, it seems very odd to me. I expect we will be shouted down now though...

In fact, its funny how such a story appears as soon as the conservatives get in power and aim to bring back fox hunting which most of the population dont want

Was my first thought too - something not quite right for me! What ever happened - poor little babies

GypsyMoth · 08/06/2010 22:15

most of the population dont want to bring bacl fox hunting?? are you sure??

jenroy29 · 08/06/2010 22:18

my first thought was "who leaves a patio door open at night" but then I'm scared of moths

wagtag · 08/06/2010 22:19

Why would they? I would think responsible parents teach compassion and respect to their children - not cruelty- which hunting most definitely is.

wagtag · 08/06/2010 22:24

It sounds more like something a dog would do. Why are they talking about culling? We haven't done that to Pit Bulls, have we? Dogs have carried out lots of attacks on children. I smell a rat!

So people think it's a dog rather than a fox?

A fox is a member of the dog family, and hungry enough, will search out food. Foxes eat lambs, so why not babies?

Foxes, timid? Not the urban ones I've heard of.

GypsyMoth · 08/06/2010 22:25

'most of the population' is not exclusively parents though is it

and yes,ALOT of people DO want fox hunting ,hence its done anyway, regardless of the law

why do you think 'someone' would go to the trouble of making up this attack?

LynetteScavo · 08/06/2010 22:28

I've heard rumours that people think it was a vicious family pet rather than a fox.

I've my babies were badly hurt, I wouldn't be able to make up a mythical story.

wagtag · 08/06/2010 22:29

Dogs live with humans on a much more familiar basis. All the urban foxes I have come across have been extremely timid in comparison. My children love seeing them. There are thousands of foxes in London - so how come this doesnt happen frequently if they are so aggressive?

GypsyMoth · 08/06/2010 22:30

didnt the police catch a fox in their garden though??

MarionCole · 08/06/2010 22:30

They set a trap and caught a fox the following night. There are lots of foxes in London.

wannaBe · 08/06/2010 22:31

welcome to mn op.

I do have my own opinions, but tbh I think that statements such as "In fact, its funny how such a story appears as soon as the conservatives get in power and aim to bring back fox hunting which most of the population dont
want" just make you look like an idiot so I'll refrane from posting them here.

bibbitybobbityhat · 08/06/2010 22:32

So are you a namechanger or a new poster wagtag?

Have you read the other thread we have had on this fox attack? Have you seen all the posts from regular long-standing posters here who have chased urban foxes out of their houses?

I live in London and am sitting here with my back door wide open right at this very minute.

I distrust you just as much as I distrust the foxes living under the shed at the bottom of my neighbour's garden, tbh.

I don't know. I wouldn't want to speculate.
However I do think the whole idea of a Fox cull is ridiculous and I really hope this doesn't mean there will be a knee-jerk reaction.

Grace Dent put on her twitter recently 'News Just in: Foxes to become new paedos'

funny but sadly seems to be true.

Chil1234 · 08/06/2010 22:35

Urban foxes, such as roam around London suburbs, are not timid, shy creatures at all. There are many reports of them being found in houses. Attacks are rare, admittedly, but if you found your two babies bleeding from severe cuts to the face and neck and there was a big old fox standing next to the cot are you going to think the fox just saved them from a passing Jack Russell?.... or that the fox probably did the biting?

It's horribly cynical to say that this story is some backhanded attempt to bring back fox hunting. Hounds and riders are hardly going to be charging down Kensington High Street. However, like any other wild animal when it reaches pest status, if fox numbers are getting out of hand (which they are) a cull seems long overdue.

wagtag · 08/06/2010 22:42

why are people being so hostile? I am allowed to have an opinion. It is very sad that something has attacked the twins but I think personally that there is something not quite right about the whole thing. i have children and i am allowed to care about our native wildlife which is in danger of being persecuted. Shall we have a ban on guns after the events of last week in Cumbria or would that interfere with those who like to shoot the same said wildlife?

I@m sorry Chili but

"there was a big old fox standing next to the cot are you going to think the fox just saved them from a passing Jack Russell?"

did make me chuckle a little.

op - there is a thread already on the go about this (in the same topic you have posted in) - why did you not post there?

" i am allowed to care about our native wildlife which is in danger of being persecuted"

Are rats & mice 'persecuted' because we send in the Rentokill man if we find them scampering around our homes? Or are they killed because being in an environment peppered with rodent shit is going to make us very ill? Foxes are nice-looking creatures but they can get nasty, they carry disease and we can't afford to get all Pixar Animation about it if there are too many of them living among us and some start to cause problems. Then they have to be dealt with.
