Completely understandable, yes. He humiliated her totally, but it was she who chose to make that humiliation public.

moondog · 06/08/2005 23:50

Height is not the issue, just that annoying sanctimonious scrunched up face and his self important mannerisms.
And didn't they have a hell of a job shifting himout of ministerial digs when he resigned in such a dramatic fashion???? He liked the lifestyle big time.

(Sure I didn't make that up...is it possible to be libellous about someone who is dead I wonder???)

He also only came clean to his wife (as they werer waiting to board a plane to take them on holiday) because the NOTW phoned him immediatley prior to boarding and told him they would run the story if hne didn't admit to shagging Gaenor.

A riding holiday on a dude ranch I believe......

bubble99 · 06/08/2005 23:51

But I'm sure she felt better for it on balance.

MrsGordonRamsay · 06/08/2005 23:51

Mizmiz, your neighbour is unfair. Based on meeting RC a couple of times and knowing Westminster a little, and knowing a few people with contacts, I think he really did take a stand based on conviction. Don't forget he led the Opposition attack on the Tory Arms to Iraq scandal - he was an expert on that benighted country.

And what a stunning performance he gave over Arms to Iraq too. Cowardly Tories gave the then shadow Foreign Secretary something like half an hour to read through the report of an inquiry that had sat for months, in a desperate attempt to avoid being held to account. But Cook managed to ask the pertinent questions and reveal quite how far the Tory administration had misled us. Tony's not the first PM to lie about Iraq.

moondog · 06/08/2005 23:53

Well edam....glad we were getting our money's worth at any rate. Why are we so surprised and grateful when politicians do the job they are actually paid to do I wonder????

Caligula · 06/08/2005 23:53

No Bubble, she didn't make it public - from what I remember, the News of the Screws were going to run the story - the news was out.

Caligula · 06/08/2005 23:54

Hmm - not sure she did feel better for it. Afterwards, she said she'd made mistakes based on the pain and anger of the moment.

MrsGordonRamsay · 06/08/2005 23:55

Ah yes but then she got into bed with the enemy, and had all sorts of newspaper columns all over the place.

bubble99 · 06/08/2005 23:56

No edam, but he does it with such style Is it me or have his dramatic pauses in speeches lengthened of late.

bubble99 · 06/08/2005 23:58

Ah, I see. In which case I feel sorry that she didn't at least get the chance to out him herself.

Caligula · 07/08/2005 00:08

Oh bugger Robin Cook. Now that I've had another glass of wine, I've come over to the moondog point of view and thought, yes, why the bloody hell should we be grateful when politicians just act like normal decent human beings instead of venal power freaks?

And is it our fault they're venal power freaks, or theirs? Or is it all the fault of the News of the World?

bubble99 · 07/08/2005 00:10

Murdoch's fault, I say.

bubble99 · 07/08/2005 00:19

Who do you respect as a politician Caligula? Is there anyone that you think is a good egg doing the rounds at the moment?

MrsGordonRamsay · 07/08/2005 00:20

Wot that he is dead ??

Now that is absolute power, RC walking in the hills of Scotland, Murdoch makes a decision,, RC dead.

WOW.

ROFL

MrsGordonRamsay · 07/08/2005 00:21

B99

Joking.

bubble99 · 07/08/2005 00:23

He moves in mysterious ways MGR.....

Caligula · 07/08/2005 00:30

OMG, now there's a question. At this time of night after half a bottle of wine, I can't think of any. I'll have to think about that one and come back to you. Possibly on another thread.

Actually, I have just thought of one - Bob Marshall Andrews, my MP. Opposed the Iraq war, is firmly a real Labour man (holds no truck with these ghastly new labour clones), hasn't publically consorted with dictators, prostitutes, television presenters or interns, doesn't appear on first glance to be a hopeless alcoholic, isn't a media tart, doesn't appear to be in the pocket of either a local business or a major trade union, has pointed out in a calm and sober fashion that we have enough laws that aren't being enforced without introducing new ones that won't be properly enforced - in short, appears to be what a bog standard MP ought to be and generally isn't.

bubble99 · 07/08/2005 00:40

It's the clones that get to me. Blears especially. She was blathering on about 'reaching out' to Muslim communities the other morning. Meaningless nothing words and phrases. The sort of pap that I've found myself listening to on meaningless training courses over the years, spoken by people in front of flip-charts with meaningless blurb written on them. When did all this spew become common parlance. It's like the job title thing, Clinical Governance Facilitators is one such gem I've heard recently. And I particularly hate 'challenging' what's wrong with 'difficult?'

Rant over. Glad you've got a good MP. Few and far between I reckon.

QueenOfQuotes · 07/08/2005 00:47

boo

NomDePlume · 07/08/2005 08:58

Hulababy · 07/08/2005 09:30

I agree.

Hardly the appropriate place for such nastiness, especailly as the man has only just died. Time and place and all that

To die at just 59 is so sad, so premature

Blossomhill · 07/08/2005 09:32

I think this thread is appaling. How bloody insensitive

edam · 07/08/2005 09:32

Why should we respect decent politicians? Because we should respect anyone who does their job to the best of their ability, and tries to help other people. MPs do a lot of social work for their constituents, chasing official agencies, etc. etc. And to encourage the less decent to shape up.
