Cabin crew strike dates announced

BBC has just reported that 20 new strike dates have just been announced by BA cabin crew. Various 2-3 day strikes around end of May beginning of June including half term and the bank haoliday weekend.

Will BA survive this? Actually do you think there will be any impact on the labour party?

cornsilk: Good point, well made.

Bloody Unite! They royally fucked up my trip in March and this one, which is meant to replace the last one, also falls in strike dates. I contemplated not flying BA but they're the only airline (as far as I know) who would fly where I wanted, when I wanted, and so decided trust them thinking "surely they won't be moronic enough to strike again." I wish I hadn't now, though I didn't have an alternative, really...

Surely there's no public support for this strike?

Does anyone know how soon we'll know if our flights are cancelled, or how likely it is that any flights will be running, etc?

Sorry - didnt follow the last strikes too much...but what was the effect on the other airlines? are people getting bumped off flights to accomodate stranded customers etc? If you have a flight booked with, say, Qantas they should be fine, right?

KittyTwoShoes · 10/05/2010 21:55

irishbird, thanks for the info

spatch, I'm sure Qantas will be absolutely fine. I doubt anyone will be getting bumped off anything no matter what the airline - a rush for any empty seats, yes, but kicking off people who already have tickets? Not likely. I don't think you need to worry.

Thanks guys! Just checking!

Nancy66 · 11/05/2010 09:08

this will finish off BA - and the striking staff will be out of work in a struggling industry.

Well done BA staff & Unite! I know if you walk up and down an aisle caked in make up and holding a kettle you probably ain't the brightest - but Good lord can't you see that a well paid job (even though you don't think so) is better than no job?

wannaBe · 11/05/2010 09:14

well clearly they must be being paid too much if they can afford to take nearly a month off work to strike.

whomovedmychocolate · 11/05/2010 09:31

Nancy66 - they aren't allowed to carry kettles these days either

mumoverseas · 11/05/2010 09:38

cornsilk summs it up far better than I could have

When we got caught up in the December strikes BA in the UK were saying they'd offer refunds but we'd booked in the Middle East and the agents here refused it. Eventually they changed our flight to a different date within 12 months of our original departure date although they didn initially try to charge us for changing our booking

LOL at nancy

I will never book with them again. We normally go to Florida every year and the last two years were flew business class BA all the way from the Middle East. This October we are flying BMI and Virgin.

Wottknott · 11/05/2010 13:47

All flights to and from Gatwick will continue to operate as normal - irishbird, this would be your flight to the Caribbean as they only depart from GATWICK.

Gatwick flights were not affected last time. Only Heathrow.

BA will survive this.

Oh and by the way I have seen a significant price hike in Virgin Atlantic flights today! Ah at least you can sleep well knowing you're contributing to another island for Mr B! Poor man.

Wottknott · 11/05/2010 13:48

I think cornsilk talks alot of sense FWIW

Shows how outdated the unions are really.

Lets face it, with the volcanic ash causing havoc now and again it is the last thing an airline needs.

I did hear today that BA have bought seats with rivals and hired planes so passengers shouldn't be too affected.

merlin · 11/05/2010 14:05

Thanks for that wottknott.

I hope they announce specific flight details soon.

Wottknott · 11/05/2010 15:44

Melin what is your flight number? You can see details on the site. I see you mention you are going to Spain so I am guessing here, but have a look.

Iberia flight numbers: BA 7050 to BA 7299.

They'll use alternate airlines

Add your contact details (mobile and email) on to your flight booking REF/Locator on the BA website, updates should be sent to you

merlin · 11/05/2010 17:08

Thanks Wottknott.

Couldn't see anything specific for my flight yet. - no is BA0496.

Will update with my email and mobile though - thanks.

merlin · 11/05/2010 17:14

Just had a thought - being a bit thick here - but ......... I am due to fly out on Fri 21st when they are striking and fly back Sun when they are not.

Soooo.... is it safe to assume there will be no problems with return flight or will their planes be in the wrong place?!!!

passmyglassplease · 11/05/2010 18:25

my ex is taking the dcs to one of the affected countries and is due to fly into Heathrow on 6th June.

does anyone know if I can request that he does not take the dcs?

amidaiwish · 11/05/2010 18:46

bugger
my flight no. is 0490 - it is in the list of those "possibly" affected and won't give more details til Thurs 20th.

if they would issue refunds now at least i could re-book with easyjet... but they won't give refunds unless the flight is actually cancelled which won't be known til next week. by then there will be no easyjet flights, or they will be about 5 squillion pounds

Wottknott · 11/05/2010 19:39

amidaiwish if its important (guessing from post) to be there for a wedding, why not... think of it it another way..

do what as they are offering:
ie: rebook onto an available BA flight to the same destination for up to 355 days from the original date of travel at no additional cost.

Book something for next year?

And then book the easyjet flights to ensure you get there in May for the big day. I know it more expense (ie no refund), but .. it's a thought!

amidaiwish · 11/05/2010 20:05

the wedding is here next week, but luckily none of the guests are flying in on BA.

but yes i will look at transferring the flights to next year and then book new flights with easyjet.
thanks!

SomeGuy · 11/05/2010 22:29

we flew during the last strike and there was no impact at all - they actually had more crew than usual on our flight, because so many volunteers turned up for work.

amidaiwish · 11/05/2010 23:09

good to hear! fingers crossed

mumoverseas · 12/05/2010 10:02

If you are looking at booking flights with another airline its worth doing it sooner rather than later.
In December we had to look at this option to get us back to the UK and we looked online at 10pm and the price quoted with BMI was SR8,000. When we went into the travel agents at 8am the next day, the same flights were SR23,000!
