And they're going to study him for 24 hours

24 hours?

Have him under 24 hour surveillance for a year and see what happens!

No food or water for 70 years. What a load of bollocks.

I read it that they're keeping him under 24 surveillance, not just for 24hrs, iyswim.

Still bollox though obviously

JustMyTwoPenceWorth · 30/04/2010 07:21

oh yes. 24 hour observation for 3 weeks.

In my defence, it is very early in the morning.

And yes, still a load of crap.

You die after 3 days with no water, don't you?

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 30/04/2010 07:23

My first thought was they were going to study him for 24 hours, decide that he's not an alien or a robot, and therefore publish their scientific conclusions that he's full of bollocks.

JackBauer · 30/04/2010 07:35

It also says that he has been observed sine April22nd and had nothing adn not been to the loo.

That beats david Blaine hands down, surely?

StealthPolarBear · 30/04/2010 07:39

wasnt there a woman a few years ago who claimed to survive by eating air?
i think she died

kreecherlivesupstairs · 30/04/2010 08:02

Maybe he just ate so much in his first 13 years he has never needed to eat since
What a load of cobblers. I remember a child who (I think) some Nepalese people decided was the reincarnation of Buddha. He never ate or drank or peed or pood. It turned out he did.

davet · 30/04/2010 08:31

From what I've read they have kept him under survalence for 10 days and he didn't eat or drink anything at all. Afterwards he was as fit as a fiddle. Now thats spooky

StealthPolarBear · 30/04/2010 08:49

let's treat him as a baby
is he having wet and dirty nappies?
Alert and active?
Then he's eating and drinking something

foxinsocks · 30/04/2010 08:58

he should release a diet book

DaisyMeadow · 30/04/2010 09:14

This is nothing new.
Similar claims has been made many times over re some Catholic saints.
Look up Marthe Robin, a French Catholic mystic of recent times. Apparently, she did not eat ( apart from a wafer of weekly communion), drink or sleep for over 50 years. Testified by many doctors.

bintofbohemia · 30/04/2010 09:16

I saw this - he's being monitored 24-7 and hasn't taken in anything (or been to the loo) in 8 days. I wonder how long they'll keep monitoring him? Am intrigued to find out what's going on with it...

bruffin · 30/04/2010 09:22

wasnt there a woman a few years ago who claimed to survive by eating air?

I don't think she died but as soon as they started monitoring her she became ill

DaisyMeadow · 30/04/2010 10:10

This alleged phenomenon, ie ability to survive with no food or water for a long time, has a name, breatharianism.
If water is consummed but no food, it is referred as inedia.

Pardon the source, Wikipedia, but this is claimed about a German Catholic mystic, Therese Neumann:

'In July 1927 a medical doctor and four Franciscan nurses kept a watch on her 24 hour a day for a two week period. They confirmed that she had consummed nothing except for one consecrated Host ( communion wafer) a day and had suffered no ill effects, loss of weight or dehydration '

If all these claims bear some truth, there is obviously still much for us to learn about human body....or supernatural.

bruffin · 30/04/2010 10:21

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jasmuheen Jasmuheen - ellen reve]] is the woman I was talking about.

They had to stop the experiment because she was suffering from dehydration

AMumInScotland · 30/04/2010 10:24

People do occasionally manage to survive disasters etc without food or water for a surprising amount of time. I think the lack of exercise probably also makes it easier - Indian mystics, cloistered contemplative nuns, and people trapped by a disaster all have that in common. But not for 70 years....

bruffin · 30/04/2010 10:24

Jasmuheen link I have seen a few documentaries about her.

mayorquimby · 30/04/2010 13:14

well that's because he's lying

kreecherlivesupstairs · 30/04/2010 14:18

I think so too mayor.

KurriKurri · 30/04/2010 14:22

Have they checked to see if he's actually alive? - its hard to tell from that photo.

cory · 30/04/2010 19:13

The military are going to study him in the hope of discovering survival techniques for soldiers. But the man himself claims that the reason for his ability is that he was visited by a goddess in his youth. Now that is going to be a bit difficult to replicate on a large scale.

Morloth · 30/04/2010 21:57

Lets assume he isn't lying - WHY?!

Why would you want to live for 70 years without food? I really like food, it is nice. A life without chocolate/bacon/wine? WHY?!

Snobear4000 · 03/05/2010 22:10

There is a worldwide cult of people who think they can survive on air and "love" alone. Mostly new-agers, acid-heads and psuedo-science quack-jobs. They are all liars, yet some of them make their children or other gullible people in their care starve and ultimately dehydrate to death in order to experiment with the theory.

I had the unfortunate displeasure of once knowing an idiot who claimed to be living on air, light and love alone. (She lived with a friend). I came into the house one day to see her holding a donut.

At that time I actually said the one most clever thing I have ever said in my life.

"What are you eating? The hole?"

Twunt.

Nancy66 · 04/05/2010 12:21

there was a bloke a couple of years ago who claimed to have survived on nothing but fresh air - he was kept in a room for observationa and, guess what, he was begging for food after 48 hours.

If you don't eat or drink you die.

bintofbohemia · 04/05/2010 18:08

I wonder if there's any way to get an update on the story?

hocuspontas · 04/05/2010 18:18

If you google his name there was a similar test done on him in 2003.
