Should those who seek to take lives forfeit their 'Human Rights?'

IMO the (alleged) failed suicide bombers should be treated in accordance with the terms set out by the Human Rights Commission (INHCR? UNIHCR?)until such time as they are found guilty or otherwise of their planned atrocities.

I don't want to enter into into an Iraq convo here. For the record though, I am disgusted that when Bush and Blair, killed and maimed innocent Iraqi civilians it was called 'Shock and Awe' or 'Liberation.' It's now happened here and if it transpired that one of the (alleged) failed suicide bombers had had his whole family wiped out in Iraq by an allied bomb (though from what I can tell none of them were Iraqis) I would be halfway to understanding his actions.

Anyway, I digress. If these men are found guilty of attempting to carry out mass murder, and thus denying other people of their right to live, I believe they should forfeit their rights to appeal under Human Rights Legislation. What do you think?

It's not a human right to be read a bedtime story and be tucked in at night.

(Although my DS appears to think it is.)

hunkermunker · 30/07/2005 23:58

It's not?! DH has been having me on all these years...

TwinSetAndPearls · 30/07/2005 23:59

I agree with Caligula, I am proud to be part of a society that extends human rights and justice to all. Justice does not mean turning the other cheek but appropriating a justified punishment to the guilty after a fair trial.

anyone see The New Al-Qaeda on BBC?

The Internet being used to train terrorists, manuals on bomb making and weapons use - on the internet.

The programme included Mohammed al-Massari, a Saudi dissident, who has lived in London since the 1990s. Dr al-Massari legally hosts a number of websites which, he admitted in a BBC Panorama interview on Sunday, could inspire young British Muslims to fight in Iraq. The sites included details on how to use a range of weaponry.

In a scene towards the end of the programme they showed some radical muslim clerics gate crash Regents Park mosque during the last election and interrupt a press conference being given by the Moderate Muslim Council of Britain there was a guy there shouting - Islam is going to be victorious whether you like it or not, Islam will take over Britain and Washington whether you like it or not.

this is what we're up against

lemonice · 31/07/2005 00:01

If you don't agree with human rights what do you think should happen to those arrested?

unicorn · 31/07/2005 00:03

have to bow out gracefully (just letting you know in case of mysterious disappearance)

sorry if anyone read me the wrong way - no intention to be personal.

this will run........

Caligula · 31/07/2005 00:03

And you think we can fight that effectively by abandoning the principles on which our democracy was built?

Well why don't we all start wearing burkhas now? What exactly is it that we're supposed to be defending from the mad mullahs?

bubble99 · 31/07/2005 00:05

I think I've been clear throughout this conversation in stating that 'these people' are alleged failed suicide bombers. I certainly hope that I haven't suggested that they are 'guilty until proven innocent.' I grew up in the 70's when any Irishman within ten feet of an IRA bomb was hauled in for 'questioning' and often wrongly incarcerated. I just feel that our society and judicial system has over-compensated. We are a democracy (allegedly)and every voice should be heard and respected. I just feel that the 'rights' of those who seek to harm, for whatever reason, are valued above those of the mass who seek to live their lives without fear or prejudice.

withdrawing human rights from suicide bombers will have no effect on our life and liberty in the future..except to make it worse...

TwinSetAndPearls · 31/07/2005 00:07

exactly we are having to deal with a few mad fundamentalists who granted will stop at nothing to turn our free democratic (ish!!) country into a state ruled by fear and dictatorship, by dismantling our own freedoms we are helping them on their way.

lemonice · 31/07/2005 00:10

that'll be a chorus from a hand knitted lemon cardigan and n/ice creamy pearls...

TwinSetAndPearls · 31/07/2005 00:12

lol lemonice

bubble99 · 31/07/2005 00:12

Caligula. We're defending our right to be bad mothers, drunks, liars and everything else which stinks within our society. We're defending it because by doing so we enable ourselves to exercise free (and often crap) will.

We relinquish this at our peril because what comes with it is tolerance, freedom of speech, choice, feminism and the everything else which is denied to many in other parts of the world.

with an accompniment on the fiddle provided by the depraved roman emperor!

TwinSetAndPearls · 31/07/2005 00:13

although it was nero who played the fiddle whilst Rome burnt wasn't it?

Caligula · 31/07/2005 00:15

Sorry, maybe it's because it's after midnight, but I've stopped understanding the arguments!

Eh?

Caligula · 31/07/2005 00:16

Am now jigging around the room while the house burns down....

TwinSetAndPearls · 31/07/2005 00:17

are you surrounded by oiled young men in loin cloths?

lemonice · 31/07/2005 00:18

I get slightly confused at this point. I see two men being arrested at gunpoint in their boxers on live TV, and I think yes, the security services have done a brilliant job to get this far but now comes the hard work. Those men have been arrested and they must be taken through the due process of law.
