We are in Kuwait City, should have arrived home on Friday afternoon, so we weren't cutting it fine for Monday back at work.

Luckily we are in transit here, so fingers crossed our tickets hold good when we finally get flights!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/04/2010 07:23

c/p from other thread incase it helps here

ashcast

looks like scotland has some opportunity. perhaps northern england for a bit.

magma seen in crater which I understand to be a good sign for the ash to become less prevalent.

ENAC announced the gradual reopening of the airports of northern Italy from 8 am of Tuesday, april 20th 2010, starting with domestic flights. Gradually ENAC will authorize the rest of the flights

However Trains from Rome up say that they are full until the 23rd. However last night the head of the trains said that they had put on 1000 extra seats up to Milan.

girlsyearapart · 20/04/2010 08:07

wow another hormonal person welling up here! congrats to the myboots family.

Well latest text from my Mum says they are having a meeting with the embassy people at the hotel in kuala lumpur but obv people who have been stuck since Thursday want priority and my parents weren't due to fly till Monday.

She said there is no sign of any flights yet.

HandbagAddiction · 20/04/2010 08:18

Are you sure about that girlsapart. DH was in KL but went via Tokyo and in now in Washington. He said that some of people who decided to stay put and not try to get home via the Tokyo route had been offered flights from KL to Amsterdam and travelled yesterday? This was Emirates I think.

HandbagAddiction · 20/04/2010 08:20

Doh - what am i thinking, I meant KLM. I think this will all get covered by their company though since they were all away on business, so I completely understand that it's not the same as having to pay for your own flights. Main point though is that things are moving again at KL.

MmeLindt · 20/04/2010 08:26

BarryKent
That is absolutely atrocious, both your DH being threatened with pay cuts and the airline not putting you on an earlier flight

ReshapeWhileDamp · 20/04/2010 08:40

Appalling about docking DH's pay, Barry. As a matter of interest, is it a state school or a private one? How can your employer punish you for an act of nature?

jacksgrannie · 20/04/2010 08:47

Anyone tried to get back from Venice? My brother has been stuck since Friday. Has just decided not to wait for clearance from Ryanair but to try to get back by rail and en route to railway station now. I think best route is rail to Milan then TGV to Paris and then Eurostar. Understand there are seats on Eurostar available. What are Milan/Gare du Nord stations like? Can I book anything for him from here. He has no access to internet en route, we are relying on mobile phones. Any thoughts much appreciated as v. worried about stressed out brother.

MrsC2010 · 20/04/2010 08:53

Meee, my husband is stuck in Antigua. Very sad at the mo.

TheMoreItSnows · 20/04/2010 09:44

Apparently my mum and dd1 have just made it past Lake Geneva on Sylvia's bus from the embassy in Rome - anyone stuck there give her a bell - it seems to work well. Optional drop at Dover or onto London Victoria. Glad that it is helping some get home.

Barry, I was due to fly with Emirates last Sunday, to our long-awaited romantic honeymoon-like holiday - last opportunity before our baby arrives... When we learned that the flight was cancelled, this was on Saturday, we immediately called them. No getting through to Emirates UK, but their office in Dubai is open 24h and we got through to them easily enough. We asked to be re-scheduled as soon as possible, but they offered us seats for Thursday/Friday at the earliest - although we had seen online that they were still selling cheap (!) seats for Wednesday. When we asked why we couldn't have those, they said it was because they were in the wrong booking class. They could only re-schedule us within the same booking class (that's not economy vs. business vs. first - rather, within economy, there are numerous different booking classes, often indicated by letters, eg. "F"). We asked if we could pay extra, and one person said yes, for £300 per person (that's more than the entire price of that flight leg); but when we called again to do this, another person on the line, said they can't do that. We ended up asking for a refund for the cancelled flight and booking a new one for Wednesday (tomorrow) online... the new one actually worked out cheaper than our original, cancelled flight!
Of course, no-one knows if it will actually take off on Wednesday...

This is just to say: Call Emirates, if necessarily directly in Dubai; ask about possibilities if you were prepared to change booking class/pay extra; if the answer is unsatisfactory, call again a few minutes later, it seems you can get lucky with different persons on the line! But you really must let them know if/that you are prepared to pay extra, else they will ONLY check for rescheduling-availabilities at the same price/same booking class - no wonder there is nothing available! And if you see a reasonably-priced flight online, just book it; and then get the refund for the cancelled flight.

Good luck!

Girlsyeararpart - we are stuck in Kuala LUmpur too - we were supposed to be flying Air Asia to Stansted on Monday. After many emails we got spaces on a flight today, spent 5 hours at the airport only to be told the flight had been cancelled again. Gone to an airport hotel now. DD happy as there are lots of English children in the pool! Air Asia are at least attempting to put on extra flights when the ash situation clears. I think they are encouraging people to book flights on 28/29th so that they no longer count as stranded. I said that I didn't want to book for then, I wanted spaces on the first available flight and miraculously they came up with this flight today. Shame it couldn't fly though.... Am hoping the situation will repeat itself when we are finally cleared to fly...

Welcome to the world Baby Boots!

LouIsOnAHighwayToHell · 20/04/2010 10:34

Spring - I am ok. We are ina lovely hotel so am not worried about somewhere to stay. Thank you for the offer though.

Handbag - I don't think things are moving in KL. Been speaking to DH this morning and apparently people were offered those KLM flights but then when they went to the airport they wouldn't let anyone check in. So they are still there!

Before DH left KL, he was told by someone at Air Malaysia that they would be looking to clear out Dubai and Singapore first before KL because those are the hubs for other international flights. Whether that is true or not I don't know.

ILoveGregoryHouse · 20/04/2010 10:46

Hi All. My mum has just left for the airport to come home from Bahrain. Now I'm worried it's actually not safe for her to fly, though and [panic emoticon].

Good for you Meita, hope it works out for the flight on Wednesday - you off to the Maldives?

Barry, we booked online through the Emirates webpage. It was a bit wobbly and took us several attempts - kept crashing. But we got there eventually.
I suppose we were really lucky in getting those cheap flights. Also, we booked last Saturday for this Wednesday - so quite a few days ahead. If you can't find any reasonably priced flights online (though, do check other airlines too! If you get the refund from Emirates, you are not bound to re-booking with them!), then by all means try to get the best out of their re-scheduling. Just don't forget to emphasize that you are willing to pay extra for changing booking classes, if it will get you (or rather your DH) home earlier!

Jacaqueen · 20/04/2010 10:53

BarryKent there have been stories in the press about a lot of teachers and pupils being effected. One school has 8 members of staff stuck in various locations.

My sister is a teacher who is trying to get back from Spain.

Meita · 20/04/2010 10:53

Thanks ILGH and Barry, we were going to Mauritius, but not holding out too much hope right now! We've decided to go to Cornwall instead if our re-scheduled flight is again cancelled. Not quite the same thing, but sometimes you just need to take what you can get, eh?

MmeLindt · 20/04/2010 11:02

Madascheese
How is it going? Thinking of you and Operation Munchkin Rescue.

LouIsOnAHighwayToHell · 20/04/2010 11:06

There is a teacher here stuck in Singapore and he is one of 15 teachers stuck overseas.
I do wonder how many teachers have changed the georgraphy lesson topic to volcanos?

Rosa · 20/04/2010 11:16

Jacks Grannie - I am in Venice . The best route is to go Venice Milan and then Milan up to Paris however I think he will find trains are full- esp the Milan Paris route He should go to the station Sant Lucia if in Venice or Mestre if out. He could look at alternatives maybe train up to Geneva and then up to Brussels or Paris .
Then you could book the Eurostar for him or he could get a foot ferry from Calais.

slim22 · 20/04/2010 11:25

My son's school in singapore is short of 21 teachers this monday!

On the other hand they are extending a helping hand to non singaporean based families stuck in singapore with school age children and offering to assist with their tuition and liaise with their schools.

I know that from here, Emirates operates some flights but there is a horrendous backlog.
Nothing on KLM/AF/Luftansa/BA
A few SIA flight to southern Europe
