If you were the Chancellor, what would be in your budget?

OP posts:

Cameron is basically saying he agrees with the budget

well that's nice

CaveMum · 24/03/2010 13:33

I'm disappointed that the inheritance tax threshold has been frozen. So many average families are affected by this just because their houses have gone up in value.

It is not fair that people who have "valuable" houses have to pay the same percentage as people who have large amounts of cash etc.

Ewe · 24/03/2010 13:35

Oooh DC is like a yappy little dog!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/03/2010 13:36

there was nothing on child benefit was there? I was looking forward to being able to buy an extra sausage roll.

sb6699 · 24/03/2010 13:46

Dont say that about fuel prices badkitten

DH already has hauliers coming over from France (I think he said France) competing for business. Even though they have to drive to the UK, they can still offer the same rates as DH because fuel is so much cheaper there.

We live semi-rural as well because we cant afford to live in the nearest town. We already spend £70 per week on fuel.

I agree there didnt seem to be much mention of families in there. Given that you are hard pushed to buy a 3 bed semi for under £250,000 round these parts, that wont help us either.

Ewe · 24/03/2010 13:46

CaveMum, if as a couple your house is worth more than 650k, you're not that "average" and the people who own the house don't pay it, the beneficiary does and I for one think that someone who is receiving in excess of 650k can afford some tax on it.

morningpaper · 24/03/2010 13:47

Cameron not really attacking the budget much is he? Just lots of general abuse he practised this morning in front of the mirror and shouting "I thought of that first!"

ZephirineDrouhin · 24/03/2010 13:48

Quite so MP. He's a bit rubbish.

morningpaper · 24/03/2010 13:48

No mention of families really but I expect that all parties are sharpening the knives to hack into tax credits etc. after the election

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/03/2010 13:50

have had to switch to uk parliament to watch Clegg. Makes me very [grr]

morningpaper · 24/03/2010 13:51

argh who is that chump constantly heckling Clegg? I would send him to his bedroom

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/03/2010 13:51

Clegg only one actually talking about real things.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/03/2010 13:53

We heard nothing on green issues either.

morningpaper · 24/03/2010 13:54

Clegg sounding like the only grown-up in the room

LadaGoGoGo · 24/03/2010 13:56

Green issues can go take a run and jump as far as I'm concerned. Suprised they didn't use a green issue as an excuse to tax us more though

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/03/2010 13:59

mp - the sad thing is, that many people aren't being given the chance to hear what he has to say. bbc seem to think its more important to chew over the ideas themselves rather than hear what the third leader in the House has to say.

noddyholder · 24/03/2010 14:00

Stamp duty amnesty is only for first time buyers many of whom could never afford 250k which is about 10x the average wage where I live in the SE and prob more elsewhere?!?!?He could have been a lot harsher on cigarettes and alcohol

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/03/2010 14:00

lada, even if you are a green sceptic investing in 'green solutions' is a good way to boost British local industries.

CaveMum · 24/03/2010 14:02

Ewe I don't think Inheritance Tax should take into account the value of a property unless it is worth more than £500k.

Ewe · 24/03/2010 14:02

Actually, on Twitter people saying stamp duty is for first time buyers only, apologies. Guardian transcript read like it was for all!

LadaGoGoGo · 24/03/2010 14:02

If it were handled correctly I could happily support green policy, unfortunalty it's just used as a stick to beat with us and the governement see it as a good way of getting even more money out of us.

Ariesgirl · 24/03/2010 14:05

LadyGoGoGo, I don't want to offend but I honestly can't understand how any parent would maintain that green issues can run and take a jump as far as they're concerned. Should everyone be able to carry on exactly as they please with no thought for the consequences? (Sorry, I know that's off topic)

Ewe · 24/03/2010 14:05

CaveMum but current threshold is 325k per person, so 650k for a two adult household so you can currently receive up to 650k without being taxed as I understand it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/03/2010 14:07

So when will the election be called???

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/03/2010 14:18

You can read all 228 pages of the budget here
